I the the OP is looking for earlier examples. Ged's tone is very deliberately overdriven/distorted. A lot of the earlier overdriven tones weren't necessarily intentional- the tone broke up because the amps were so loud and/or were overdriving the console's input

One of my favorites.

It sounds a bit like Leslie cabinet might have been involved or something else going on. e.g. Perhaps he used his '50s single coil P and the effect of the overdrive combined with more wavering output of the strings over one pole per string, instead of two per, might have created that sound.

I don't assume the thumbnail image is informative of what happened on the recording.

When I think of LZ II, I generally think about pretty clean bass tones - Lemon Song, Ramble On, What is and What Should Never Be, etc.

You are correct... I think it's his jazz bass, but he is playing through a Leslie cabinet. Those older Leslies were 40w, so crank that up and you got your OD. That is one of the coolest bass tones. I've been able to get close with an OD and a chorus.

...I realize there's such a subjective take on if a tone is Overdriven or distortion. I came across a couple cool used OD pedals and got to thinking "What are some great examples of bass OVERDRIVE in classic rock recordings?" I have a pretty large music library, my first thought was JPJ on Led Zeppelin II.

What say you pros?
