Clean Boost/Buffers

I totally agree here. I just picked up an SA PEQ and it really rocks. I plan to use it for the same reason you do Jimmy, do give my Affinity P/J I put the Geezers in a little volume and umfp on the J side. I mainly got it to help get my P a little more prominent in the mix, it worked awesomely. Plus it has 4 presets so you can set one for your P/j, one for your P and then one for a straight boost. It may be overkill for you and what you want but it was PERFECT for what I wanted and it worked. Perfectly. I also second the EHX LPB1. Ive used it quite a bit and it worked very well as a straight boost. For me. You can usually find them used for around $20 to $30 too.
looks like JimmyM's settled for the Bajo...but how do people rate the Boss LS-2 as a clean booster? Also acts as a buffer too as well as a multitude of other useful functions.
I was going to mention using a Boss line selector seeing as you can blend the two channels to include your effects loop and then always just run on channel A for your buffered signal.
Could this just be the Fletcher Munson effect in action (i.e., a frequency shift that you perceive due to the dB change)?
Nope, I listened for that. I set them up in my DAW to be of equal levels regardless of how hot they were recorded.
El bumpo!! Here's my situation. I just bought a MIM deluxe jazz bass that is quite the player. This is my first active Fender and it's all good but one of the things I've noticed is how low the output of the preamp is compared to the other 3 active basses I have in my possession. I'm looking for a good boost (cheap is good too!) that I can run the bass through to help hit the front end of my amp harder. I use an Eden WT-550 and I can run the pre up to about 3-4 o clock before it even starts barely lighting up the set level light. I've played the bass through a couple of other amps and it's all the same, I really have to boost pre and master to get back to the level my other basses run at with lower settings. Anyhow, I'm looking for something to boost the signal that would probably be used full time. I don't think the preamp has any issues (don't have enough experience with Fenders) but if anybody can comment on that I'm all ears. My local GC is blowing out a new Markbass Mini Boost and they have the Xotic EP boost as well. I read through the thread but wondered if there was a particular boost that would be good as an "always on" pedal??
Not that I know of on the internal controls. It's just your stock active jazz bass.
I don't have any stock active basses right now, but that'd be something to check really quickly, could save you some money. Also, having a minty-fresh battery, but you've probably already tried that. All said, I personally ended up with a Caroline Guitar Company Icarus Boost for it's High Cut knob, but I use it to push preamp tubes into distortion, not just boost the signal. There are some incredibly efficient and cheap solutions to always-on boosting, though, one-knobbers.
Yeah, I've done the brand new, hot 9 volt etc. I'm looking to stay clean. If the pedal has some color to it I'm alright with that as long as it's not too out there.
Any of the ones mentioned in this thread would work. Or you could work on all of your basses' setups, wrangling pickup heights and such, to try and get them to be more equal in volume.
But I would try the MXR MicroAmp first, it's cheap and it works very well.
I have been using a one control granith grey booster that has been working out very well. It is a 1590A like box it that matters to anyone.
I just switched boosters from the Bajo Mos to the Southampton All Things Equal, BTW. 1590a (yes, it matters to me since I'm trying to squeeze a couple more pedals onto my board), totally transparent, and not a huge boost past unity but enough for my needs.
