Clearing "Friends" From Facebook

Okay, I will tell you right up front, I think the whole Facebook thing can get a little weird. I know it has its virtues, but sometimes, I think it has created a new social paradigm and "virtual network" of "friends" that has little to do with the traditional definition of friendship, or at least MY definition of friendship. And I guess I'm a little uncomfortable with that concept.

So sometimes I go in and a de-friend people who I barely know. I mean, these people are less than acquaintances. I guess the reason we became FB friends in the first place was the possibility of friendship, or maybe in a networking attempt, the same way you might collect e-mail addresses or phone numbers, but nothing even remotely similar to a real-world friendship ever developed. In fact, as I read some of the stuff these people post, it becomes clear that there is no way in hell I could ever be their "friend."

So there is this woman who is the wife of a guy I USED to play music with. I barely know her. I would say "hi" at gigs, but I spent no quality time with this woman.

And to be honest, her husband and I didn't see eye-to-eye as musicians. So he and I are no longer FB friends, or friends in the real world. So it seemed weird to continue to have her as my FB friend.

So I de-friended her. No warning. I figured she couldn't care less, since we never talk and have nothing in common. I mean, I never even comment or respond to anything she posts, or vice-versa. There is literally NO CONNECTION HERE.

She responds by sending a FB message telling me how surprised and upset she is, how sad it is we can't be friends, and tried to guilt me over it.

WTH??? What am I missing here?

Pilgrim, dmusic...

Um, yep. That goes along with my thinking on the matter.

She is definitely one of those FB users who posts and documents every little thing that happens in her life, with words and pictures. Her food. Her kids. Her dog. Her most recent trip to the store.

I guess, for someone like that, losing a virtual "friend" might constitute a tragedy. I just have to get my head around how far people take this and like you said, be a bit more careful in the future.

I'm guessing she doesn't have many real friends.

Yeah, it's probably about time I do a sweep of my friends list. That said, I have a lot of old grade school friends on there. Sure, we might not communicate on even a yearly basis, but I would like to help cheer them on through life and gain inspiration and support from them, too.

you don't get notified when you get unfriended. that being said I axed 144 people on Friday and almost immediately the bass player for a band in my area refriends me and messages me and says "i thought we were friends on here, idk what happened, lol"

and i'm thinking to myself "we were just at the same show a week ago and you didn't say a word to me"

I've had people who I've denied there friend request literally yell at me when I've encountered them in real life. I can almost see some danger brewing over FB.

most of the people I've axed are band related in some manner, decided I don't need them on my personal page.

I wound up deleting my page. I was dumping more people than "friending". The whole time,
people requesting me who I had no idea were but claimed to know me and people that wouldn't even talk to me had I seen them out. I got it to talk to family and wound up with some old acquaintances, but only about two I'd actually call a "friend".

The word "friend" is a strong word, kind of like "love" and Facebook's arbitrariness regarding "friends" just didn't sit right with me at the end of the day.

Recently I had someone inexplicably defriend me on FB. I have to admit that it bugged me a little bit because it was a person who I thought I got along with well. I assume it was because of my political stances..but I really don't know.

The way I see FB, is that you have your group of folks who you enjoy interacting with - some are friends, some are just acquaintances, some barely even that but generally these are people who you interact with online. You share jokes, talk politics, whatever. If you post something that doesn't interest them or they don't agree with, then they can simply ignore your post. When someone defriends you inexplicably, it seems so drastic. Like they're saying "I don't care what you think and I don't want you here" rather than anything else.
I've defriended a few folks who were either hyper political or partisan. Not really because I didn't want to hear what they had to say, but more because I was tired of arguing with them.
I even defriended then refriended a certain mod here in a temporary huff. :)

This behavior is virtually astounding. After a brief honeymoon with FB when I first signed on, I rarely go there; only when family pushes something on my page. I have 28 friends and don't accept new ones. I give my real friends my digits.

I'm thinking of 'thinning the herd' of friends.....

BUT I'd post a public note on my timeline saying something about keeping it just to family or maybe 'after recent privacy issues' to give a more solid reason.
