Clearing "Friends" From Facebook

That's just freaky yeah. I think it's a given if you barely know someone you might get removed from their FB.

For me that was everyone on FB. About 3 years ago i stopped using it entirely. I still have it because this is my last link with my two HS friends but we haven't hung out in nearly 5 years now so really it's lost its point entirely. On my bday about 3 people wish me happy bday, the same ones that usually do and thats the extent of my FB poage activity for the past few years. I have nothing to share about my life that i think matters in any way and I don't care to hear about the life of people i don't know anymore...

Once in a while aunts or cousins i never see anymore try to add me and i get the notices in my emails and depending on who it is i might add them just in case i ever have to meet them. Though they shouldn't care because if they look at my page they'll see i've been inactive in forever. So i ignore friend request mostly nowadays. It's always from people I used to know. the blunr fact is i just don't have friends. I have my gf and my brother and one ex i see about once every 6 months. My only other friend would be my gf's ex (yeah i know....But it's true...i'm not exactly the jealous type anyway.)

My definition of friendship is do i see you at least twice a year and do we talk when we do. Aside from those mentioned, no one really fits the bill..

I primarily use it to promote, so I will friend anyone and everyone. If someone posts a lot of things that annoy me, I will usually take them out of my newsfeed. Sometimes, I realize that I just plain DON'T LIKE someone, and then I will just de-friend them. If I don't like them that much, I block them to, and POW! They no longer exist.

Sometimes I wish real life was more like facebook.

Never gotten a message from people I unfriended. I got friend requests not long after tho (***?).
Same here. I have unfriended a ton of folks. If I encounter, or expect an encounter, I typically block them. That way, they can't even see my profile much less try to send a friend request or message. I actually love that feature!

i dont take facebook too seriously. i only unfriend someone when i really don't know them, plus their posts annoy me.

most of the time, i just unsubscribe to people i do not care about, and they still say in my friends list as long as they aren't being offensive, or using the info on my wall to talk crap behind my back (which i find out eventually).

That said, I have a lot of old grade school friends on there. Sure, we might not communicate on even a yearly basis, but I would like to help cheer them on through life and gain inspiration and support from them, too.

This makes sense, and I also have some folks on my FB page who I used to be closer with, and I like keeping tabs on them and sharing.

But people who may not even qualify as acquaintances ever? I fail to see the attachment. I would think even people who are wrapped up in FB would see that they have no real connection to a "friend" and not take getting de-friended so seriously as to send a scolding shaming private message.

Live and learn.

I've had people who I've denied there friend request literally yell at me when I've encountered them in real life. I can almost see some danger brewing over FB.

most of the people I've axed are band related in some manner, decided I don't need them on my personal page.

Damn. That is scary.

And yeah, my situation involved an ex-band mate who turned out to be something less than a friend. If I don't have him on my FB friends list, why would I have his wife, who I barely know?

Again, freaky behavior.

Recently I had someone inexplicably defriend me on FB. I have to admit that it bugged me a little bit because it was a person who I thought I got along with well. I assume it was because of my political stances..but I really don't know.

I even defriended then refriended a certain mod here in a temporary huff. :)

Pretty sure it wasn't me. :)

I've defriended people that repeatedly post content that I don't want to see...but it has to be pretty annoying, and someone I don't interact with (who randomly friended me and has 1K "friends").

Honestly, there are also people I'd feel bad about defriending and don't feel like confronting so I just hide them from my feed. Not Relic, or any of the other TB people though.

Isn't this something? We have to 'justify' such actions? Brave new world indeed. I'm not sure i like it.

After the fact, the thought crossed my mind that perhaps I should have done a "public notice" and made some PC excuse for purging my friends list. In other words, tell a lie to soften the blow.

The new virtual protocol escaped me, just as the concept of people's lives revolving around FB escaped me.

WTH??? What am I missing here?

Seems her definition of "friend" is different from yours, and by de-friending her on FB youve sent her a sign that you do not wish to be friends.

As you say, she's barely a passing acquaintance. I would tell her thats all you see your relationship with her as.

Ive managed to acquire a few facebook "friends" that Im not really friends with. Every now and then I'll see them post something ridiculous and I wonder why theyre there, and then I delete them. I try to keep my facebook limited to people I actually interact with, but a few other interesting people have managed to befriend me on the book.

I just had a new guy in my Muay Thai school add me. I've never spoken to him once and barely interacted with him in class, as he is a beginner and I'm in the advanced classes. I didn't accept his request. But a new dynamic now occurs. Now, when he sees me, he will remember that I didn't accept his request and that makes me feel a little uncomfortable. However, if he yells at me like someone else mentioned, I'll let him have it.

I let this woman have the last word, no reply from me. I hope that ends it.

And there are many people I have received and not accepted friend requests from. Now I'm wondering how many of them suffer from this malady and think I'm being "anti-social" or hateful for not friending them.

Nothing like Facebook to expose someone's politically weak intellect, racist tendencies and sexually perverted way of thinking. When I had FB, I would say "Ok, this one's a complete idiot" to myself daily, regarding some of the posts. Its fine to lean any way you want politically, but most people blatantly stating their feelings on certain issues would have such ill informed positions with no basis in reality. Talk about "low information" voters...try "no information" voters.

It goes for both parties, liberal and conservative. It really left me with a great feeling of impending doom and frustration that these were the people voting on election day. Both ends were guilty of the most obscene, intolerant crap I have ever had the displeasure to lay eyes on...and there are thousands of people who shared the same views. Scary stuff.

So politics played a part in why I left FB. Not because I leaned one way or the other, but because so many people that did felt the rest of the world thought the same way they did...like an idiot.

I make it a habit not to FB friend;

1 - people I don't know
2 - people whom I've met casually & briefly who later send a FB friend invite

Good policy.

I'm going to add:

3 - Friends of friends (in a misguided effort to form some kind of artificial circle of virtual friendship)

I also had to de-friend a couple of fans of bands I have played with in the past, because of the political ramblings. No more mixing my personal FB page with band business, groupies, and acquaintances.
