Double Bass Clevinger EUB megathread

Clevinger EUBs are wonderful. I met Martin at the NAMM show in 1987. He was very kind and had a lot of information about all of his basses. I stopped by his booth again at NAMM in 1991, and spent a long time there playing a couple of his newer basses of the day.

Fast forward to today, I am playing a Clevinger six string Imperion EUB as part of the other basses that I play in the current band that I'm in. That bass has a great pizzacato sound, an easily adjustable neck, and an excellent arco tone.
There is also a DIN to MIDI connector on the bass that allows for some more fun exploring with sound modules and more.

Thank you for asking, but I no longer have that bass in my possession as it belonged to the BL of the group I was in many years ago. It was a very nice instrument to play. Perhaps one of my own in the future.

Unfortunately I did not get the opportunity to use the MIDI feature of that bass. But I had a lot of ideas of what I would have tried if I did.

Might anyone know what brand and model of tuning keys Martin used for the Clevinger Concerto 4 string bass? One of mine has malfunctioned so it's time to replace them. Any help will be welcome and appreciated. Seems there are so many types offered for sale these days and I'd hate to order the wrong ones. Thanks!

Mike, there is a guy on the Clevinger Bass Facebook page that seems to have direct access to Martin. I'd try there first.

I believe my 1985 Clevenger “Keyhole” originally had Grover’s, the problem was that they were bass guitar gears so you had to cut the afterlengths way back and loop a knot at the end of the string. It wasn’t ideal.

I filled the slot of the peg with some wood (on both sides, I think) and let a hole in between (or maybe drilled one if it was one piece of wood) for the string. Works with Spiros (3/4, Weich) and Evah Pirazzi Weich. The former owner had Spiro 4/4 (S42) on it and an open slot.

BTW, winding over the end of the string on the peg fixes the string too.

Success! The pegs are an exact fit!
Grover 142 Vintage Bass is the model. 2+2 style. Seems like a good solidly built item.
It's nice have this bass in good working order again!
