What you mean few metal bands composed songs? They weren't all playing cover songs were they? :confused:

Why would you hear Cliff mess up a bassline on a recorded CD? They do multiple takes when recording so they get the best possible playing on the record. They aren't just going to leave in some glaring mistakes. And how many live clips with Cliff have you heard that had great sound quality? I wouldn't say Cliff was very up-front in the mix, but he wasn't really buried either. Just right for the most part.

And I really wish people would stop glorifying Cliff by saying how much he was into classical music, as if that gives him some sort of moral or musical high ground on anyone else.

Noone here really KNOWS how much theory Cliff knew, or how much classical he played or listened to. Have you ever personally heard Cliff playing classical?

Not trying to bash Cliff, I just hate it when people try to make him out to be more than he is. Just because he played with distortion and wah (kinda like a guitarist sometimes), had a solo track on a record, died young, and listened to Classical music. That's cool and all, but why can't people just leave it at 'Cliff was an awesome bassist who made some sweet music'?

My opinion - 'nuff said :)

Cliff was the reason for which I started to play bass, it was and is still is a major influence in my approach to the music.

I want to be a Cliff fan member!!!

Way to ruin a great idea. Cliff would be the first to tell you guys who don't care for his style "thats' great, now blow it out your ass and get on with your own thing instead" ;)

I love Cliff Burton. The man, and the myth behind him.

Excuse me, Fade to Black on Ride the Lightning? Can you really hear the bass during the verses?

I'm a HUGE Cliff fan, but his main problem is volume. Luckily live he had a decent amount of volume. But on the albums? Forget it. Creeping Death as well — you can hear the bass fill? Whenever I've tried to learn a Metallica song I've been amazed at the fills and stuff that you simply CAN'T hear on the album. There's the DCC remasters that have much better bass, but he's still pretty burried. Tell me what frequencies to boost if he's really in the mix at all...

And people say John Myung is quiet :/

HUGE Cliff fan here. One of my early inspirations that's remained with me. Every year, on September 27th (his anniversary) I have a Cliff night, playing along to the first three Metallica albums and watching "Cliff 'Em All" afterwards. :)

I've never really tried to copy his gear (other than owning a Morley wah and a Mesa amp), but, even now, years on, I'm looking to him for inspiration.

I really ought to get my friend Martin on here... he plays a black Aria SB1000, and even plays like Cliff... fingerstyle, with his pinkie finger sticking out! :D

To those slating his tone - you have to remember that the first three Metallica albums were recorded in the vinyl era, and mastered for that medium (with much less dynamic range than CD) and that the art of production for metal albums was nascent at best. I've been hoping that those early Metallica albums would be remastered at some point, bringing out more of the real tone.

This is true, but he's basically non-existant in a couple of songs, and there's so much you can't hear in the albums. I'm sure vinyl wasn't THAT bad...

And they have gotten remasters... Very expensive to buy, but check out the DCC Gold Disks for MoP and Lightning... or get 'em from "somewhere" (pm me if you've having trouble ;)). Like in Fade To Black you can actually hear the bass...

...and justice for all is the only album on which you can't hear the bass, it sounds like someone is humming in the background. On Kill 'em all, Ride the lightning and Master of Puppets you (at least I) can hear the bass very well.
That's why I came up with an ...and justice for all sample ;)

Hah, for those of you who can't hear Cliff on those 3 albums, turn it up! I usually play my music so loud I can hear everything, even the background noise (I usually only listen to music when I drive, or when I am on the computer, with headphones.) People around here know its me when they hear me driving down the road. Usually Anthrax, Misfits, or Metallica is blaring out my windows for all the public to hear when I drive. Not many metalheads around in my town.

Let me start: I bought my Rickenbacker mainly because Cliff used one (among other reasons), and I have a Misfits tattoo on my right arm. Also, I doubt you can tell me much about Cliff that I don't already know.
