Cliff Burton Fan Club

I'm not going to get into the whole Cliff vs. Jason argument.....They're both great in their own ways.

I do want to inform people, that the final straw that made Jason leave Metallica was that James wouldn't let him release his Echobrain album, and essentially didn't give Jason the musical freedom that he needed. James has his family, Jason has his music. Music is everything for Jason. He has chosen not to start a family because of the time it would take away from his music.

Just so you know ;)

Does anyone know the latest on Jason Newsted's playing status?

I know he had surgery after tearing his left bicep and rotator cuff after attempting to catch a 90-pound bass head that had fallen off his amp.

That was about 9 months ago...

Just to let you all know, this thread was intended to be about CLIFF, and not to turn into a "Cliff was good, but Jason was better", and vice versa, arguement. That pissed me off to come on here and see that. They are both great. Leave it at that. I personally prefer Cliff over Jason, but that's just me. So F*** off.

BTW, I also prefered Jason's stuff over Cliff's a few years ago, but that was before I actually listened to the Cliff era stuff, and then there was a time I didn't like Metallica (I would like to thank my friends for getting me back into them). If you are here to start arguements, that makes you no better than the people who do that in your threads.

Jorah, your # is....16.

When Newsted got in there, his first album with metallica was AJFA(I have that CD), There is no song on that album where the bass sticks out, he just doubles the roots of the guitar parts. He did that for God knows how long.

Wow. You should kick yourself in the face for that. His lines were actually pretty complex on AJFA but they are just very burried in the mix.

When Metallica sold out at the beginning of the Black Album era and later around the release of Load, they started cutting their hair short and playing bluesy music. Newsted went along with it because he thought he was cool, he was with the band, but if Cliff was there, it probably wouldn't have happened, and if it did, He would have gave Metallica a kick in the ass and they would have more than likely changed back, and Metallica would still be respected by 1,000s of their now-former fans.

Jason never 'influenced' this change or anything. And, he couldn't stop it, Metallica never let him input anything as far as their musical direction. And you don't know how Cliff would have happened. The money was rolling in and people change. Cliff could have wanted change just as much as James or Lars. You don't know that.

If it wasn't for Cliff, Newsted wouldn't have even picked up the bass.

Untrue. Jason started playing bass before Metallica was even a band and before Cliff was even known as a bassist.

And as for the pick part, no, I don't hate him for using a pick, I don't hate him at all, I just look down on him for trying to fill someone's shoes that was about 1,000,000 sizes too big and failing miserably, and then playing a part in killing a Band that WAS awesome.

?!? He tried out and got the gig. What is he supposed to do? Not play? He didn't change or influence anything in the band, any changes made were all the doings of Lars and James.

In case you haven't noticed, I disagree strongly with your arguement here. Cliff was way closer to a god, His legacy still lives on this long after his death. Cliff was way MORE METAL than Jason. He had the attitude way more than Jason did, Cliff would turn over in his grave after he saw Jason did to Metallica.

Noted. Everyone is allowed to have their opinions.

Thats right, real Metalheads jump in a band for 10-12 years while playing a part in the band's sellout thus killing the awesomeness of the band, then use the prestige he got from Metallica to form his own little band, then leave the band to go play with his little garage band.

He killed the awesomeness of the band? Didn't know that. I guess im out of it.

R.I.P. Cliff, even though he probably can't, seeing how Jason has scarred Metallica besides helping it heal through Cliff's Death.

Againg with the scarred? JASON HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. HE WAS A BASSIST WHO TRIED OUT AND APPARENTLY WAS THOUGHT TO BE GOOD ENOUGH AND PERFORMED WELL. That is all.

Now I wish I didn't voice my opinion on the last page. But that was just it. Opinion. Not a bashing, like jorah.

Oh, and if you think Jason can't solo, check out this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VjOiYT1_KOo

He had had some shoulder/neck surgery a year or two before that happened as well :( He's been on a pretty long rehab schedule since the last surgery.

The latest news is that Voivod is going to be recording the follow-up album to Katorz sometime this fall. And then possibly touring (somehow, as a tribute to Piggy) in 2008. :)

This drags on and it could probably forever and ever. I never said the bass parts sucked in AJFA, they just didn't stick out at all, AJFA was like the second song I learned on the bass. Complex stuff, yeah, oh well, whats the point? Still didn't stick out.

If he didn't like the way he was being treated, he should have been a man and walked out at the point where it was getting to him or talked about it with the band or something. He shouldn't hold a spot with a big band until he gets his on little thing together and jumps ship. If he didn't fit in with the band that well, which apparently he didn't because they kept screwing with him constantly, then he should have sailed his own ship, not stick with it because he was in a band he loved to death and he was making the money.

If he was going to quit(which he did), he should have done it about 10 years before he did, he would have professional experience behind him, and he could have got into a band that treated him better, and Metallica wouldn't have went into that huge downward spiral(for three years, yes, thats a time scar, you don't get time back) they went into when Jason quit(Thats how he scarred Metallica, he quit when they needed him most), thats Karma I guess.

(THE ABOVE WAS MY OPIONION, YES, AN OPINION, I HAVE ONE TOO, NOT A BASHING)
But anyways, for me, Cliff was Metallica, I'd never seen anyone like him, and I never will more than likely.

This is only an arguement about the reality of the things, not the "if" or "when" like "If Cliff was still alive..." I'll admit, Jason is a great bassist, he just did things at a terrible time.

And you say Metallica's moves would only be decided by James and Lars? Thats Metallica, not Jason's. He refused to make a statement because he was afraid his former "idols" now bandmates now "former bandmates" would have a problem with it.

Jason = Great Musician, bad timing and ways of doing things(band management-wise).

Yeah, I guess you are about Metallica picking a bassist who they thought was good for the job. Kind of hard to find another Cliff eh? Thats why it was hard for those shoes to be filled.

But Metallica is dead to me pretty much, I don't think too positive of them anymore, I don't listen to anything past the last album Cliff had an influence on(AJFA).

Cliff was better to me, the end. Like previously stated, he was Metallica to me.

Now stop trying to change the way I look at the after-Burton phase of Metallica.

I didn't try to change anyones thoughts in either of my posts. Your original reply to mine was more provoking in that direction than any of mine. But anyways, end of it, this could drag on forever like you said.

you just dont listen do you? Jason wasnt allowed to give input, apparently he tried various time with riffs he had but got to hear "its to like "whatever band james could name at that time""

Jason did nothing wrong, and neither can he be blamed for not sticking out on AJFA, becouse he was VERY buried in the mix.

I am, very sorry.. it is probaly childish of me to deffend Jason in this thread as its "the Burton fan club" (i bet most you are 16 or under, eh? that was the same time i had the Burton period..)

though i am of the honest opinion, that a thread about a bassist should be to discuss about him and what evolves around his band/music, dedicating one to glorify his image is IMO wrong..

Here's a picture of my Misfits tattoo:

and my gear, a bit Cliff inspired:

(Mesa, Morley and E-H)

My basses, more Jason inspired but Cliff also played a Spoiler:

Sounds like: Link Removed (starts after 1:30)

So you could say I'm a Cliff Burton fan! :-)
Though this gear may be inspired by my idols, I must say it works damn well for me (not only for my Metallica tribute thing)

WOW! you are awesome!

Ohhh great new great news!!!!:bassist: Jason shows 'em how to play the bass with Voivod!!!He is far more great than I used to think about him. That Voivod album is one of the best I've ever heard and I am a "Metal Head"!

For those of you that can't get a Morley PWB, the Ibanez Weeping Demon (WD7) does the trick. I got mine today, WOW, I love it. Played it for 2.5 hours, until I got a headache and my fingers started to blister. It has a sound very similar to those on Cliff 'Em All on the solo after Sanitarium, and the solo before For Whom The Bell Tolls. Plus, it sounds great without distortion as well.

And, Thunder Fingers, if you were referring to this thread as one dedicated to GLORIFYING Cliff's image, it isn't. I made this thread so that fans can show their appreciation, not to make him out to be more than he is.
