Interesting fact that I though I might throw in there. Lars of all people was once confronted by an interviewer about how you can't hear the bass at all on AJFA, to which he replied something to the effect off: We mixed the bass almost completely out because after our recent tragedy we didn't want people to be immediately comparing Jason to Cliff, but I assure you, there is no where on the album that the bass guitar doesn't exactly match the rhythm guitar. Now, no one will ever no if this is actually true, but the man DID say it.
Ok, so far we have:
ALiP BoB #2
datsgora #3
FC Bass #4
machine gewehr #5
Risen Ashes #6
Bluedevilxx #7
Pete C #8
Lokire #9
Risen Ashes, 2 of those people didn't say anything that indicated they wanted to be in, so you are now #6.
Wow. You should kick yourself in the face for that. His lines were actually pretty complex on AJFA but they are just very burried in the mix.
Jason never 'influenced' this change or anything. And, he couldn't stop it, Metallica never let him input anything as far as their musical direction. And you don't know how Cliff would have happened. The money was rolling in and people change. Cliff could have wanted change just as much as James or Lars. You don't know that.
Untrue. Jason started playing bass before Metallica was even a band and before Cliff was even known as a bassist.
?!? He tried out and got the gig. What is he supposed to do? Not play? He didn't change or influence anything in the band, any changes made were all the doings of Lars and James.
Noted. Everyone is allowed to have their opinions.
He killed the awesomeness of the band? Didn't know that. I guess im out of it.
Againg with the scarred? JASON HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. HE WAS A BASSIST WHO TRIED OUT AND APPARENTLY WAS THOUGHT TO BE GOOD ENOUGH AND PERFORMED WELL. That is all.
Now I wish I didn't voice my opinion on the last page. But that was just it. Opinion. Not a bashing, like jorah.
Oh, and if you think Jason can't solo, check out this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VjOiYT1_KOo
I started out as a metallica fan, and by there a Cliff Burton fan, but it soon developed over to preferences for Jasons live style, and those good lines on Load and Reload. i have always felt that Jason was a much pro style bassist opposed to Cliff.
Cliff was low in the mix, unless you count those occasional farting noises. also, IMO, he have a completely horrible right hand technique, it looks so unprofesional, but hey, play as you want.
He had the occasional very cool lines (like the intro to for whom the bell tolls, Orion..) but other than that its mostly very standard for the genre, IMO, Frank Bello from Anthrax did more.
Either way, i get a little irritated when i read that he was the first to work with distortion. John Entwistle and Billy Sheehan was far before him, i have the Entwistle instructional video wich was recorded in 81 or so, and that is a very fuzzy tone.
its not meant to be ragging on him at all, as a former fan, i still have alot of respect for him, i just think that hes often blown out of proportions as a bassist.
hi mate, not many Norwegian friends on this forum. (at least not as i have seen).
did Cliffs right hand technique looked horrible and unprofesional? .WHAT???... eeh..
when I look on Cliff 'em all i can't stop looking on his right hand when he is playing! looks like he have played for hundred years! simply terrific fingerwork.
but that is my opinion
he outgrew many bass teachers in his early days, his technique is not bad ! ^^
Cliff had some kind of permanent injury in his right hand, like a torn ligament or something. So his pinky always stuck out in a weird way while he was playing. Certainly didn't seem to hinder his playing though!
Cliff had bass teachers? I've never read anything about that...

what JASON did to metallica? Jason didnt do crap to Metallica, Metallica did what ever they "did" to themself, Jason had close to NO input.
Jason is 10 times the musician Cliff Burton was IMHO, his stuff is alot more "groovy" and musical when he was allowed to do his own thing.
And ill agree, the closest to flashy Burton was, was Anesthesia.. for the love of god, Steve Harris was a much more flashy player at that time.
how did jason scar Metallica? Just, How?
even though i turned out to be mainly a cliff fan for a while, Jason was the one that made me start playing bass, becouse of his awsome live attitude.
