What's the serial number on Cliff's bass? I'll check mine when I get home but it's an 84 also.

Nice! The guitar is a PE Supra, top of the PE line.
Not sure if it was mentioned but Paul D'Amour from Tool used a Rickenbacker. Rics are very good for metal. Especially if you run them in stereo.

I think someone was posting earlier in this thread that Tool is probably not really Heavy Metal.
They were a metal band.
Can you honestly not tell the difference between Rush and Quiet Riot?
I consider Kiss glam, but most of my friends just consider them butt rock.....

I probably wouldn't like them then, I am not a fan of the 'hardcore' metal.....

It was me.
I'm 80% sure he used one on Undertow.
And as I pointed out I'm 100% sure Tool isn't a metal band. They are a progressive rock or alt rock band. They don't want to be metal and metal fans don't want them to be metal; therefore not metal.
They, like Rush, Faith No More, and Primus are examples of bands that are metal adjacent and are liked by most metal fans, but are not metal bands per say.

That's debatable. Personally I respect Rush but can't stand listening to them.
A discussion about what defines one genre over another goes well beyond the scope of this thread.
Suffice to say if you put on Black Sabbath's Paranoid and Rush's 2112 and can't tell the difference there is simply something wrong with your head.
Bottom line: The Rick is a pretty flexible instrument that can do funk, rock, metal, and disco. It finds very little use in certain types of metal, including thrash, but is very popular in other types where its retro look and tone are sought after.
Cliff was a retro guy so his attachment to a retro looking instrument is understandable.
