They were a metal band.
Can you honestly not tell the difference between Rush and Quiet Riot?

Yes. I can honestly tell the difference between Rush and Quiet Riot.

The point I'm making is that QR isn't any more heavy metal than Rush. It all kind of falls under the umbrella of metal. Some consider Zeppelin to be the first heavy metal band. Others consider Sabbath to be the first, and some even consider Cream to be heavy metal.

That's debatable. Personally I respect Rush but can't stand listening to them.
A discussion about what defines one genre over another goes well beyond the scope of this thread.
Suffice to say if you put on Black Sabbath's Paranoid and Rush's 2112 and can't tell the difference there is simply something wrong with your head.

Bottom line: The Rick is a pretty flexible instrument that can do funk, rock, metal, and disco. It finds very little use in certain types of metal, including thrash, but is very popular in other types where its retro look and tone are sought after.
Cliff was a retro guy so his attachment to a retro looking instrument is understandable.
While Rush isn't my favorite by a long shot, I'll take them over Quiet Riot and Metallica ANY day!

Except Rush doesn't. They are a prog rock band.

And they'd all be wrong. Zep and Cream were rock bands that certainly influenced Sabbath, and like Deep Purple dabbled in what could be classified as metal, but were not metal bands. Black Sabbath is the definitive start of metal although much of their blues influences were clearly present.

To try to tie this in some way to the OP, Geezer did on very rare occasions play a Rick as well. I think he even used a pick when he did.

A friend of mine shipped off to Los Angeles after High School determined to join a band after going through a bass camp of some sort. He was an avid fan of Cliff & was torn up pretty bad after the accident, but it made him even more determined.
He came back about 3 months later with a deep hatred of Hollywood, Los Angeles, and California in general.

I went out there 3 years later & loved it, but I wasn't looking to join a band, just there to attend as many shows as I could.

Saw Metallica at the L.A. Forum the night Frank Zappa died.

Cliff Burton is my original bass hero.

Unfortunately, reading threads about him on Talkbass is like watching a grade school pissing contest.
When I was in grade school, I never participated in, knew anyone that participated in or even heard of said contests existing. Seems like a really gross kind of contest!! :***:

I saw Metallica at the Whiskey A-go-go when Mustaine was in the band. They were awful!!

Everyone's entitled to an opinion on the subject of what is considered heavy metal. There's no real right or wrong.

And yes, a Ric is great for heavy metal.

That's like saying Kanye West is a rock artist based on his opinion of himself and one cover. I can't call Toby Keith metal because I feel like it. Or rather, I can, I'm just a dolt for doing it.
There are defining characteristics that set genres apart from each other. There are objective ways to categorize music based on tone, pace, instrumentation, modes, and themes. There are gray areas where things bleed from one to the other, but most are easy enough if you pay attention.
