I'm selling a amp, put in on there and get all these warnings about spam...sure as guano I get this back from "Mary Beth"...

my office, but the issue is i am an oceanographer and i do have a

Bad grammar always leads me to believe it is some kind of scam. And how does she have no phone availability but internet access? I have to believe that an oceanographer would have access to a phone, and would have to have gone through enough schooling to use proper grammar. Or something close to it at least! Happy you were smart enough to dodge that bullet man.

Spam o Rama.

Most likely if you click the link rather than go to paypal directly, it sends you to a lookalike site. You set up your "account," enter your bank information, and the spammer empties your bank account.

Seriously, who decides they need to buy an amp the evening of their departure to an out-to-sea research location? Plus the emails never actually indicate that the sender is aware that what you're selling is an amp and doesn't ask any of the common-sense questions anyone would ask about an amp.

Apparently oceanographers haven't heard of satellite internet, funny cause you just know they use gps in their research, sidescan sonar, and on and on. But no satellite phone or internet. Poor oceanographers! Scientists with no internet for research. Too bad McGiver wasn't aboard, betcha he could rig a satellite receiver with the empty TIN CAN.

Is there a sticky for this sort of thing? This question is asked so much that there should be one. The signs are so simple that there should never be any doubt.

1) Bad Grammar

2) Not being specific to your item for sale (especially if they use the word "item")

3) Offering more money than what it's listed for especially if it is so..they can

3a) Send someone to pick up the item and the extra money is for your trouble.

I had almost that exact message when I was selling my motorbike a few months ago. Only difference was this person was going to the army. Sent a couple e-mails back just for my own entertainment, was curious to see what response I got.

Turns out it's pretty easy to annoy the hell out of a spammer :D

A scam just because of bad grammar? That means most of the posts on this, and every other forum, are scams.

One thing about people with advanced math/engineering education is that many can't spell to save their lives.

i love those replies. i always string them along for a while usually ending the communication with a huge page of borderline inflamatory speech including every profane and insulting phrase i can come up with. last one i got sent a reply asking me for my bank account so they could just deposit the payment-- wow is there anyone who falls for this? i hope not, but i guess they wouldn't be there if it didn't work sometimes. i also noticed that spelling my phone number has stopped the "ping" calls they use to confirm the number is good b4 selling it to telemarketers. example (one23)4five678nine1. just a tip sort of on topic.
