Close to pulling the trigger on an SG!

Im really close to buying a gibson SG. I was hot for a new les paul, but it comes down to what you play well. I love the tone of a longscale, as i play r & b for the most part, but i have short fingers & small hands and i simply play shortscale much easier and cleaner than a longscale. That being said, between my longscale thunderbird, long acoustic, short viola and an SG i should be a tall dog in short grass for some time to come! I played a faded sg last week, having never owned a gibson, i must say it was a really nice guitar, low action, no buzz, light as a feather and a big bottom end!

shop around. There is a cool 1965 EB0 in Nashville that sounds great and plays like butter. Great old vibe at a decent price. There are lots of Gibson basses out there.

I've always favored the necks on the SG's and the 335's.

I'd definitely look for a short scale. The Epi EB-3 34" version doesn't balance worth a hoot - I had one briefly and it was unpleasant to play.

IMO if you want a 2-pickup bass in the SG-body series, the short scale versions are the way to go.

Yeah, i've seen some ludicrously reasonable prices on lightly used faded SG reissue basses recently. Not always with a hard case, but if you can live without one you can get a great deal.

My first bass was a kalamzoo, SG copy (years ago), which I found really easy to play. I didn’t realize until later that it was actually a crappy bass. But at the time I thought I rocked. Actually, with better tuners, it probably, wouldn’t have been so bad. But I’ve always want an Epi EBO because of the memories of my first bass. I would still buy one if it were cheap enough, although I have 5 basses now. But it would have to be cheap, because it’s a one trick pony. I’ve also considered an EB3, which would probably be better.

Do it! You won't regret purchasing a SG bass. It was my first shortie and i love it. If you look around you might find a decent 2nd hand example at a good price - the original "reissue" basses from the early naughties also came in some cool colours. I'd really like to get my hands on one of the Shell Pink or Polaris White ones....

If Gibson would make a really vintagey faded EB-0, I'd actually buy one.

I very nearly bought various of the "SG basses" in the past few years, but there was always something not quite right with the deals.

Some of the "faded" models were available extremely cheaply, like ~$575 with stacked discounts.

I bought a 2009 faded cherry SG when I first took up bass and loved it for its short scale as I have small hands, however, as my band started to develop more and play a bigger variety of songs I found the SG tonally very limited and lacking in output compared to my MIM P so I sold it, it is definitely harder playing a longer scale but ultimately it is worth the effort .

I've been wanting a short-scale for some time, actually have looked at some of the Gibson's but just WON'T pay their prices. I'm actually considering a Warmoth build...say twin Dark Stars on a swamp ash SG body w/ Black Korina top...but WHO makes short scale necks?
