play em both and pick the one you like the best...

P Bass is the defacto tone.. you could use a JBass, but you'll be playing with the knobs all the time..
the JBass is more versatile, but the PBass is what it is.. look for one that has a maple neck and an alder or ash body..
a P/J bass does have more variations to it, but the J pickups is usually a much weaker tone unless it's a humbucker..
as for color, that's up to you.. i had a 78 black PBass with a black guard and a maple B neck..

Maybe try colour coordinate your bass to go with your skin tone. That way you can accentuate the colour and be fashion fantastic as well.

You shouldn't be so much worried about what bass you get as much as you should as what pickup covers you have on it.
Because its a known fact that girls always look at your shoes first. if your shoes are the same colour as your bass then they will look at the shoes then notice the bass and then will be putty in your hands.
