In Indiana, it would have to go to a public auction. Schools are not allowed to give away or sell items that have value. Again, that is Indiana. No idea about the rules in Texas.

Offer to replace it with a brand new mim fender or squier. Some people see brand new and toss out the old without thinking twice.

1982-1984. Only a few I can find that sold here or on Reverb, but they're all pre-COVID gear price inflation (sold between 2015 and 2018), and that was for under $1k. Now I'd be surprised if the value wasn't closer to $2k given the above and the general condition of the instrument, but I'm not an expert on G&Ls so I'm just extrapolating.
