I just thought of something in regards to the current discussion (maybe even historically) of LG vs. LM...

My question: Is the RA only considered as the "3rd option" or a "nice to have"???

When got into A-C's I read all the previous threads and it seems like this the general thought process for current owners and guys looking to get one. I fall into this category also because my RA5 "just came about" due to opportunity and availability. But this thing is proving it's worth and the whole selling it when the LM gets here thought is slowly discipating.

Hey Yohann,

If I were still playing 5 strings, then I would say that the RA5 would be "the one" to have. Most guys that have properly set up an RA5 and used it in a number of situations (and there are VERY few) would tell you that it is the most versatile of the 3 models, capable of covering all of the ground between the LG and LM, and coming pretty damn close to both of them at either extreme. All in all a great bass that I would think very deeply about before parting with it.

Man, I can definitely see this. I know the RA is kind of a "3rd half" design, but I played some LG's, LM's and RA's at NAMM and especially noting I could probably get an RA closer to 9 pounds than an LM, I'd be VERY seriously considering one if the time came to get a second AC for me. I REALLY liked it a LOT.

I'm one of the "VERY few". I use my RA5 in an
Acoustic Rock/Pop/Country band and in a Classic Rock/Pop/R&B band. It covers a lot of ground for me! It IS the only bass I will ever need. I have had my RA5 about 18 months and I am still VERY happy with it. My gas for other basses is gone. Well, I still lust for a LG5...but with my job situation it could be years before I can get an LG5.

Hey Yohann, I never thought about it until I saw these 2 pics back to back, but when you get your LM5 you'll basically end up with the opposite of what we were talking about in the 60's vs 70's debate - you'll have an alder/maple RA5 and an ash/rosewood LM5. What were Jimmy's thoughts on what a rosewood LM5 will sound like?

So far in the few live situations I've taken her to it's been awesome, really can't say I am missing anything, not even the LM. The addition of the BAV really did it for me. I agree with you on this thing covering a little of both grounds.

Mitch also said he felt the RA was the sleeper in Jimmy's lineup... Not too many guys think about them but when they experience it they know.

Pretty much except for both basses having 70's pickup spacing. I think both combinations put the basses in my tonal sweet spot. Looks-wise I've always wanted a maple board and the alder helps to tame it a bit to my liking.

I never really asked Jimmy on his thoughts on an LM with a rosewood board... Sound and look wise I was kinda set on it after playing Bigg Redd Too. But he did bring up the Honduran board idea to keep some of the spank and brightness that the LM is known or designed for. I'm all for it!

Alright, I was going to wait until I had better photos, but that may take a while and im too excited.

I picked up the all walnut KBP5 last night from Jimmy and drove straight to a gig and tried it out.(Walnut body, one piece Walnut neck) The sound was awesome! Very full, very round, sat perfectly in the mix, and everyone complimented on the tone afterwards. The band was a funk/reggae band with horn section and this bass definitely complimented the band much more than my Sadowksy(which is for sale). The singer has dubbed this bass Chocolate which pretty accurately describes how it sounded last night. Now all I have to do is wait for the LGC 4 which should be ready soon and i'll be all set!

I apologize for the terrible phone photos, Once I find my real camera I will take something decent.

Congrats, that looks great and I'm sure it sounds great!
I dig the look of the headstock.
Off topic, is that the "Shadows and light" band in the photo?

you are right... The alder is much less grainy... So im going with the Nitro SB that has the 60s sort of Opaque yellow center like those old fenders.. At least that's where im leaning right now... I was going to take a ( POLL) :) Mr Bowlus... :) joke from last thread....
But i think if i did the POLL i may wind up in trouble if everyone picked my least fav color Burgundy Mist.
