NAMM would probably not be the best place to determine the tone of a bass:D!

Actually, the tone description you put up on Saluki's thread (his similarly spec'd Sadowsky that he is selling) is very close to what I hear from this spec, and seems to be the hallmark of that somewhat unusual combination of an alder body with maple and 70's placement. Not really my thing... I either want growl (LG) or grind (LM) if I'm playing a J. Pure IMO there... the warm, pure, open tone of that RA spec is beautiful in its own way.

That makes sense, and in my own defense, I demo'd the RA at a time and place where the sonic crush of NAMM was not really a problem. :)

Question still open to jonno1707 tho! :)

Actually I don't find the RA to be scooped at all actually I find it to have a great mid push creating a clean and very articulate finger tone.
I do agree it can get a touch sizzly up top but only thru certain class D type amps like my F1 but thru my DB750 the sizzle is gone and the high end is much sweeter...
I would also agree that the low end is more similar to an LG and not as big but I don't know that I would say warmer perhaps more focused.
I do understand the reference to the Enhance control and perhaps that IS the HiBeams speaking in this particular combo...

I am digging the bass big time and would suggest everybody that loves Jimmy's basses to check one out I know mine is a keeper...

Hey Jonno, I got Nickel LoRiders on mine and I think it's a good match. And I agree with you that the RA does not sound scooped in my ears. It's actually mid-forward to me... That's I wanted to add the BAV to add more lows and even it out. I think I achieved that.

Well, FWIW, this is exactly how I remember the RA's at NAMM (mainly YCBass's, but also another one). Not sure how Ken's sounded so different, but I guess it is what it is.

+1 Again, to be clear, plenty of mid mids mids (not the burp and growl of the LG... you aren't going to get that with 70's pickup placement), none of the upper mids of the LM, and a very, very hi end sizzly upper treble (very smooth tone profile). That profile results in the Hi Beams sounding quite hollow IMO and like there is an 'enhance' control turned up too high... kind of scooped.

With the Lo Riders (especially the nickels), no problem (although again, not the burp and growl of the LG nor the grind of the LM... kind of 'in-between'.

Again, with the right strings and the right amp, you can minimize that tone profile. My RA KILLED with the AE410/RH450 and Lo Rider nickels (killed in a smooth, RA sort of way anyway). It's all about the mix and match. I'm again talking about the general tone of the RA, and how that tone is magnified in a bad way IMO with the Hi Beams, which have a similar tone profile that results IMO, in too much of a good thing.

You can hear the tone profile of the one I had very clearly in the clip I have up on my iComposition page... warm and sizzly at the same time.

That being said, alder body, 70's pickup placement and maple neck turns out to be the only J bass spec I've ever played that didn't speak to me. I either need the burp or the grind, the RA has neither IMO!

UPS man finally delivered a 3 day late Bday present to myself. HAHA!

Compared to my 77 P thats loaded with Nordy pups THAT TOALLY KILLS!!! The 77 has hotter output and more bottom but it can get muddy and lost if the wrong engineer gets on it. The AC is significantly more balanced and the tone is nothing less than what id expect it to be. The neck is flatter and i REALLY like that. :hyper:

So i guess the 77 will start wearing flats for some experimenting. I know alot of you use flats on your AC P's...never really been my thing but i will MOS DEF give it a shot.

I wasnt crazy bout having TWO basses of the same color...BUT for the price and the wood selection. ID BE A DUMMY TO PASS UP!

i think i have officially made my 77's wall hangers. :bawl: because i wont ever sell them. for sentimental reasons. Stuff i want my kids to have (when i have kids) haha

I have very FUNNY and similar story from a Sunday Morning Soundcheck when the FOH Eng. didnt want slap...He wanted.......HAHA!....I WONT GO THERE! i might get banned..hahaha..neways..that could possibly be the BEST used phrase in almost ANY situation...LOL
