EXACTLY! I let my basses get grimy as hell until the paint starts falling off....they sound better that way, trust me....
Avoid those 'micro fiber' type cloths... they can scratch up any finish.
I use the Sadowsky every day polish and the soft Sadowsky polishing cloth. Works great. Roger also has some heavier duty polish (two levels... restore and maintain) designed to buff out scratches and oxidation etc. of Nitro finishes. I have not had to use those two more heavy duty polishes on mine at this point. Roger also has a very nice RW fretboard oil available. I use Dunlop lemon oil once a year on my board, but some feel that lemon oil is not a good way to 'hydrate' a board.
The key IMO and IME to keeping a nitro finish looking nice is to only place the bass on a guitar stand on gigs, and to have a case/gig bag this has a soft, non plastic, nitro safe lining (I use the wonderful Mono gig bag with my Nitro LG).
Jimmy has mentioned that he does not recommend lemon oil because the acidity will actually dry up the board... Can't say I've had issues using lemon oil in the past though and I've been using it for years. But Jimmy knows his stuff so I will follow when my LM5-Rosewood comes.
