All the strings I've mentioned I have cut for an AC so mostly they come off and go back in the packaging for a later trial. I am now confused I am pretty sure I have Low Rider stainless and not nickels.

I should have left the sunbeams on longer and maybe I should get them back on the bass instead of pulling out a fresh set of hi beams.
YES! DO THAT! Now, I'm sure you'd have had better results if you'd just left them on and not had to deal with totally removing, setting aside, and then restretching/retensioning again, but I think it'll be ok. If not, you'll have a lot of strange overtones and they'll feel kinda dead and thuddy. If that's the case, get another set of SunBeams (not HiBeams yet!) and LEAVE THEM ON for a while. Let them settle in and give you that sweet and long lasting broken in but still alive period. If at that point you still like something else better, fine, but I honestly don't think you've experienced the SB's yet, and at this point, I still think those best fit what you seem to be describing as a goal.

Time will tell for sure of course. :)

EDIT: I should add the LG is the only bass I've ever really gone crazy with so many different strings.
I have to admit, I'm very puzzled by this myself. I definitely have my faves on my LG, but I've NEVER had a set of strings on it that I literally disliked enough to remove before they needed to be replaced. Just different variants of "good/great", never "bad". :)

:D:D Actually guys that bass is an LG5 not an LM5 though it kinda looks like one..

that is straight from the owner
Really? How is that possible? With a maple board and an ash body, even if it has 60's spacing, I'd still call it more of an LM than an LG... or maybe it's really just a "Custom"? :)

:hiding:

:rollno:All repect guys the owner and I were in communication before EBAY posting and he said it was an LG 5.

Not a stretch for me to believe.

Of course it is what it is, irregardless of model designation.

An ALLEVA 5 with 60`s pick up spacing, ash body and maple neck and board..I`m fine with that..I guess Jimmy would have the final say or should I say the first say as the current owner must have got his information from somewhere other than on this forum..is my humble guess ;)

To be honest, judging by past experience the guys in the A/C club here on TB have been much more accurate about the models than sellers of A/C basses on Ebay...there's even been a few cases of actual dealers having the wrong info about the models they were selling and it was caught on here.

From what I understand, that is the only combination that Jimmy will not do (60's spacing on ash/maple... which I LOVE by the way... that's a classic Sadowsky spec). My guess is, it is an LM5 with 70 spacing.

Per Vision's comment, I bought what was listed as an LM5 a while back, and it turned out to be a custom RA without blocks and binding:D

Regardless of what everyone says I continue to believe looking at those pictures that it's 60s spacing.

The easiest way for the buyer to find out is to get the serial number from the seller and call Jimmy. That's what I did with the couple of used purchases I made, and Jimmy gave me the whole scoop on the basses prior to purchase.

Big stretch for it not to be considered an LM even if it had 60s spacing.

Body wood/neck wood to me means alot on the designation and if Jimmy calls an ash/maple bass an LG then I'd be very surprised.

I am suprised nobody else who looked at those photos is thinking 60s spacing, it seems pretty clear unless the photos are a total illusion.

In any case this seems to be an early model given the tuners. It may in fact be before he came up with the LM/LG designations, does anyone know when he started doing that? I know Kirk has been dealing with Jimmy from back in that era.

An LM with 60s spacing or an Ash/maple LG are the same thing. I never heard that Jimmy would refuse to make either but rather his preferences are to stick with the more historically accurate specs. I like his conviction on this stuff it's what makes his business different in part.

It looks like 60's spacing to me as well in the pics, looking at the distance from the bridge pickup to the guard. It's hard to tell though because there isn't a pic with a direct angle.

You have a good point about it being an early model - no lollipop tuners and a BA bridge. Could be from before Jimmy started doing specifically 60's and 70's spec basses.

The primary picture is at a strange angle. There is another one below that is a more straight on picture, and it looks like typical 70's spacing to my eye (that primary picture does look like the pickup is in 60's position). The BA bridge can really fool the eye with the neck pickup, since there is SO much bridge behind the saddles. The eye tries to place the pickup position more toward the back of the bridge, when the saddles are actually almost at the edge of the bridge.

Can't tell for sure, but it would be WAY strange to have a natural ash/maple J with a BA bridge and not have the corresponding classic 70's bridge position.

I actually asked him to measure the distance from the nut to the bridge pole pieces. I forgot to measure against my LG last night, but if someone else has a chance to do that today before I get back around to it, it's 31.5 inches.

Oh, BTW, he also says it's 10lbs on his scale, but doesn't mention what kind of scale it was (bathroom vs actual shipping scale).

On an LM the bridge pickup is almost exactly even with the tone knob, while the LG bridge pickup is between the bridge pickup volume and the tone knob. That takes the badass bridge out of the equation.
...and measuring from the nut takes any potential picture perspective issues out of the equation. :)

EDIT: But I will give you that it at least does pretty much appear to be 60's. I'd still like a measurement to be sure tho.

:hiding:Well I 'm out of the stretching and guessing game.
I guess it leaves 2 options for those not so easily stretched on this particular bass on EBAY:

Contact the seller himself and see what he tells you OR
Contact Jimmy and ask him what the model is, OR should be as the LM designation seems to stick with those in the know how.

My information on ALLEVA COPPOLLA basses is very limited and sketchy ( stretched one could say ) as info is not even that clear on his site and much less talking to him on the phone I have found-- though I admire and respect the man's kindness, enthusiasm, humility and even more his talent.

I think I'm off to order an LMG 5 !!:bassist:

I just measured my Fender Jazz V, not an A/C of course, but the standard Fender jazz spacing is 60's position like the LG's (and 34" scale length of course). My bass is 31" from the nut to the bridge pickup. If that bass on eBay is 31.5" according to the seller, then it's 70's jazz position and that bass is a regular LM5.

Really? Thats strange. In the years I've been dealing with Jimmy I've found him to be very clear.

BTW- its "Coppolo".
