How about ground wounds I personally never tried them but they are meant to bridge the gap?

Nah... those are OK if you like a stainless steel roundwound type tone on a fretless and don't want to chew up the board, but IMO useless (or at least not an improvement) on anything else.

Interesting in that I never, ever, ever used nickels on a bass.... I've been using SS roundwounds since my Rotosound days on a Ric in the early/mid 70's. However, the nickels just seem to work better on the very 'period correct' sounding LG to my ear (again, after they are worn in.... always hated that alder/RW ping on the top end). Wonderful growly warm tone to my ear IMO there.

+1 I know that flats work well for lots of other players, but they just don't trip my trigger.

I will totally admit, I HATE flats at home... HATE them. But I heard a buddy playing flats in band one time and dug that motown-ish tone so much forced myself to try a set. Man, what a totally different beast in a mix from at home.

That said, I don't have flats on any of my basses currently, but I will very likely put flats on either a PJ5 I have, or my LG.

I think the key also is, you gotta' get a good set. There's lots of flats out there that don't really have "the magic".

The grounds just seemed to be the worst of both to me. I even tried those pressure wounds and while better, just felt you need to either go flat or round. Period. IMHO!

Well..... It's really pretty though!

Also, yet another wonderful weekend gigging with the LM.... big, grindy, bright, and a pleasure on the shoulder and back. That LM still amazes me time and time again over the last almost 4 years of almost constant gigging with it. I do think I'm finally done with the wonderful Hi Beams though. The Lo Rider steels just bring a bit more of that '70's gank' to the tone, and the tighter tension fits with my evolving playing style (much less slap, much more digging in as the music that I'm playing and that people want to hear these days continues to change).

Still loving the Lo Rider Nickels on the LG (at least once they have broken in to get rid of the zing).

I have D'Addario Half-Rounds on my 2 Ibanez semi-hollows and they do bridge the gap a bit. Problem is I don't use those basses enough to wear out the strings to where I think the sweetspot might be.

I LOVE my different strings,,, I think it has the most profound influence on a basses tone! New rounds,Old Rounds,Ground wounds,Flat wounds,They are ALL wonderful little degrees of textures.BUT you gotta have enough axes to enjoy the decadence of the subtler ones

I also switched over to Low Rider SS on my LM5 and really like that added mid grind content. The change in tension has not altered my approach in any noticable way.

I also put sunbeams on my LG5 and similarly spec'd Valenti, these have been my favorite strings thus far on a 60s stlye bass. Also I will admit preferring the Valenti with Nordy pickups over the LG5, played solo the LG is much clearer and pure sounding but in a band context the Valenti is a little more raw and traditional 60s flavor to my ear.

The LM with Low Riders is the clear winner among the three and is the only bass coming to gigs and rehearsals at this point. The original project I recently got involved with actually asked me to stick with the LM over the other two....

They look great. I did that black (LG?) a lot too. Beautiful basses all around. The one in the front almost looks sonic blue (although I realize it isn't.)

+1...it does have more blue in it than I expected. Of course, over time with typical Nitro yellowing it will probably net to more green.

Could just be Jimmy's camera. I'm curious to see how blue to green it is when I finally see it in the flesh...

That's a difficult color to photograph. It looks very similar to the color of my LG in the photo above.
