+1 Awesome to have a single (very good) player demo all the instruments with pretty much everything else held constant. GREAT data point for those who, like most of us, would never have a chance to play one of these amazing instruments prior to purchase.

Not surprisingly, I LOVE clips... the more the better, especially when they are of 'Mitch' quality (both playing and recording quality).:bassist:

However, the one Geddy Lee I've owned and the 3-4 other I've played pale in comparison to my RA4, IME/IME/YMMV. One of the main things you are paying for in a boutique instrument is consistent quality and playability. I am sure the are some killer GL jazzes out there but you might need to hunt to find one. Every A-C I've played was killer.

I agree with it being possible with a 4 given you play enough of them. Virtually impossible with a 5 though. Understanding jimmy can send you something and it's very likely great!

Mitch managed to instil some of that GAS in me and I've bough his candy apple red RA4 - cant wait for it to arrive now!

Thanks to everyone who commented...and thanks to those who posted the nice words! I really appreciate it.

Its actually really good to see that the clips brought some differences of opinion on the tone of the models as the goal was to provide another way of hearing the differences between the basses to either confirm what people already know for themselves, or bring a new perspective on a model that they hadn't already had, or just to introduce the tones generally. Hopefully it will be useful for those reasons.

A few things to bear in mind:

The basses I personally play are set up for my technique/attack/touch and although I had a little bit of time to make a few adjustments on the recorded basses we didnt have the time to do it 100% for my style...so there was a little bit of variability with string tension, action, neck relief etc. In my experience that can affect how the bass responds to my playing style and then how it sounds ( in this case) to a small degree. For instance, the RA did have a bit more string tension and the LG had much less. If they were closer to the same the RA may have sounded a bit more relaxed and the LG even a little bit punchier. Small things but possibly worth mentioning. In the end the qualities of the models came through well IMO and IME.
The the video coming will be geared to explain in fast, general terms the differences between the models, as if someone who may not be quite experienced or knowledegable on this "style" of instrument asked the question. With the soundbites there should be a good general idea of what the instruments are about.
Hopefully my lack of sleep the night before didn't impede the narrative *TOO* much! :D

Hey , you can steal anything I already stole......just do all the clips from start to finish :D

As far as showcasing ACs, I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing Kirk do his thing. After all , he has a MODEL named after him....!

Talk about being important to a brand ;)

Hopefully we'll see that one soon.

Appreciate that Ken, and I agree with all these clips/videos it can only be good for people seeking info on the brand. Not too many hanging in stores around North America...! :D

Not sure if this is still updated but as of 2009 these were the specs:

LM4 & 5 Standard:tinted or natural gloss or satin finish maple or rosewood board maple neck, standard and metallic poly finishes, choice of available guards, passive tone, Alleva-Coppolo two band EQ, Vintage bridge for LM4 and Hipshot for LM5 Standard


LM4 & 5 Deluxe: Bound and block inlayed maple or rosewood board maple neck, standard and metallic finishes, choice of available guards, passive tone, Alleva-Coppolo two band EQ, Chrome p.u. cover, Vintage bridge for LM4 and Hipshot for LM5 Deluxe

Well, one of them is Donovan via his business the FretSpot, so I don't think he'd be allowed to put it up here.

The other one looks like a private party tho, so that one does seem kinda' odd. I'd think every AC owner would be a TB'er too, right? ;) :D

Anyway, I think it's safe to put the link here... beautiful looking burst/maple dot neck RA, and the price seems good.

Hi guys! I been so tempted in buying a AC RA5. But I am afraid it will be very similar to a sadowsky nyc I had... The sad was amazing but the feel on neck and string spacing wasn't my fav.(to thick on my opinion) I found the sound a little to trebly (specially when slap) I have never tried a AC... can someone tell me if this two type of bases are very similar? I appreciate your help. Blessing!!

Even if your Sadowsky was an alder body with 70's spacing and had single coils in it, the pickups are a very different wind and the preamps are very different. I'd think they'd only sound "similar" in that they're both generally j-type basses. :)

And that's not even to get into the feel... the NYCs are typically a smaller body while Jimmy's are full size, the neck profiles are different, the weights would likely be different.

IMHO, plenty of variation there. I wouldn't worry. :)

You guys are great!! THANKS A LOT FOR HELP AND GUIDANCE!! The audio clips and info are just what I need it to open my mind... My two bad GAS I have ( for playing at church) is between a K smith black tiger and the AC RA or LG. I hope very soon become a AC family :) GOD BLESS YOU GUYS!!
