So Jimmy told me that there was enough spalted alder for two Limiteds. Here's the other one...

Guys, I'm freaking out a little here though. I need your help big time. I'm finding the "normal" string spacing not so normal for me anymore. Like, every time I pick it up to play, it just feels so big to me all of a sudden. "You've changed..." What to do? I might even consider letting her go. :bawl:

This question may well have been answered elsewhere, but I gave up trying to find it. I've only seen one A-C in person (Mike's) and haven't played any. What it is that makes them so desirable?

They are so desirable for some of us at least, for the following reasons (IMO):

1) An unusual combination of very vintage, true passive Fender tone in a totally handmade boutique instrument.

2) The 5 string models still maintain that 'old broken in vintage Fender' vibe... hard to describe.

3) Building on (1) above, the preamp is very subtle, and does a great job of just providing a little bit of 'oomph and sizzle' control if you want it without sucking the passive, vintage vibe out of the bass as many preamps do.

4) Jimmy is totally cool, a great guy to deal with, and the 'handmade' vibe of the instrument really comes through.. from the in-house wound single coil pickups to the necks and bodies carved in-house on those old school woodworking machines.

5) They are surprisingly lightweight for full size J basses


All of the above results in a beautifully playable 'best Fender J or P ever' vibe, and gives you the option of 5 strings and a preamp if you want those 'modern' touches without totally changing the vintage vibe of the instrument. This, IMO, is unique among boutique J and P bass instruments.

OT.. but the one thing i that i like about the spaltedalder bodies is that they are stupid light in weight. they feel like they are only filled with Air..

The string spacing is basically normal fender 4 string spacing but with the added 5th string... I can understand what you are experiencing.. I used to play the older Pedullas and MM stingrays with the narrower spacing, and even tighter was a 1989 spector 5 string thet i toured with.. That spector was basically 5 strings on a 4 string neck width... but i longed for a wider neck as in the Alleva and sadowskys..

I think if you give it time you will get used to it and perhaps find it very comfy... But then it may just not be your cup of tea.. and that is OK.. different strokes..
If you were to sell it i think it would get picked up pretty fast....
But i think give it some time and see if you settle into it....

The odd thing is, I come from a background of preferring 19mm string spacing. I used to hate tight string spacing and couldn't find my way around it. I've played my Limited lovingly since around Thanksgiving time last year. Now, it's as if I've grown out of playing normal Fender string spacing. It's so strange to me that this is happening. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my Limited, that TONE, that feel, everything...

just feels a little big in terms of spacing and feels like I have to work at playing it. It used to be just the opposite; it played itself. I'm telling you man, freaking out here! :help:

It's here..........and I just finished giving it a test run......

All I can say for the right now guys is.........worth every penny and every extra day I had to wait.......easily.

AWESOME NEWS!!!! :hyper::hyper::hyper: Congrats Ace!

After seeing your Alleva, I think I am going to opt for the Fingerboard binding with dots. That is just soooo cool! I can't justify, or pay the price for Jimmy's Dalbergia Negra, so I'm sticking with the best Indian Rosewood Jimmy has. I'm sure he has some great Indian Rosewood. So mine will still rock! Yours is quite an inspiration man! Keep us posted. :D

That will be a beauty, Gary! The binding is very nice! I've went back and forth on it for mine as well. We'll see!

Another strange thing I've noticed is that the same 19 mm bridge on my FBass feels different than on the AC. I wouldent have expected this without having the two to compare..but I can only guess that nut widths and neck profiles contribute something to the difference in the way they seem to "feel" too.
