Sounds good from what you can tell from the recording. I think his tone is quite a bit more punch than mine, but who knows what he's got going on in his signal chain. Lots of compression?

Yep, once again, you nailed it, except I think your LM is atypically light (unless you're talking about light compared to a 70's J, and not the LG... as LG's are typically a little lighter than LM's as I understand from Jimmy).
BTW, in the Aviom system last night, I A/B'd the LM to the LG and at least in that environment, I could hear the extra high end and upper mids a bit better than live... still doesn't sound quite as aggressive as a true 70's J to me, still having a bit more of the classic warmth to it, which I think is Jimmy's thing, but definitely a difference in that direction. I can see why Jason Langley likes to record with his LM, but he also says his LG is it "go to" bass, which I can also understand at this point.
At this point, I have to return the LM, but I'll try to take some quick snaps of it with the color corrected before I pack it up.
Thing is, in as much as the LG ended up being my preference, it was NOT by a huge margin... this LM is also a REALLY GREAT bass, and I'm thinking it's gonna' be back in Jimmy's shop for a very short time. It may even already be spoken for... I just had first dibs if it turned out I liked it better than the LG, which ended up not being the case.
So at this time, what I plan to spec is (admittedly, super common config):
LG-5
Sunburst/Tort
Nitro/Urethane finish on the body
Satin Urethane on the neck
Full-out preamp (PTC/Passive mode)
Some kind of rosewood board... TBD...
I can see getting that kind of punch with either one of the ones I had. Seriously! If I just backed off the neck pickup a bit, and then boosted the lows a bit, both of these basses were right in yer face/chest... especially if you dig in just a little down closer to the bridge pickup.

What type of ash does he use on those LM's? The heavier "northen ash" or the lighter "swamp ash"?
I think the guys who know about this stuff say that there really is no such thing as 'swamp ash'. I think swamp ash is used to describe ash that is lighter weight and less dense (I assume because it grows in wet conditions.. hence the term 'swamp'). I think I remember this correctly.
Jimmy, for the most part, just like Sadowsky, picks moderate weight ash for his bodies.

+1...that's why I put quotes on "swamp ash" and "northern ash" since those aren't accurate names, but people usually know what they mean. I was just asking if he was using lighter or heavier weight ash.
He doesn't go out of his way to select the really light stuff some folks call "swamp ash". However, he's a luthier, and upon request, he can do whatever you want. I know for a fact he's done weight requests for both lighter and heavier at this point, and not just for ash.
Hipshot, and I prefer the looks of the bent plate, but the convenience of the Hipshot.
For mine, I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but I have time.
Ah... I get it! He seems to target his full size J 5's at around 9 pounds, + or - 1/2 pound or so. So, toward the lighter end of the typical weight spectrum of 8-12 pounds for J style 5's.
Just as an FYI... he's given me a range of 8.5-10.5 pounds for all his J5's, and said the ash ones are most typically between 9-10 pounds. These are full size J5's with no chambering, standard thickness, and wood selection based primarily on grain, not weight, so that should be about what we should expect.
I got to fiddle around with Kens LM a bit last week (thanks Ken!) and definitely see what all the fuss is about around here. That thing played like butter and was top notch all around. That gold sure is sharp looking in person too.

A couple minor updates...
It's official. I've just put down my deposit. I'm sticking with the Hipshot bridge. I'm going full Poly finish, satin on the neck, and the burst/tort theme. The only specials on this bass is, he's gonna' find a lighter piece of alder to keep the bass at or under 9 pounds, and I've asked for a "selected" Indian rosewood board. It's not an upgrade like the Honduran or (holy moly) DN, but he says he's got a line on some really old and nicely dark stuff he can select from that'll look and perform great. It'll also have the full boat preamp/controls. Mainly tho, really pretty much a standard LG-5.
I should be seeing the bass in the early spring.
So there you have it. I'm officially an LG owner-in-the-making.

Well, this LM is SUPER hard to photograph and get the color right. It's really more of a turquoise/green color than a teal, much less blue to it. Anyway, I tried to fix up the pics, they're not that great but at least the bass is a bit closer to reality. Also, the camera enhanced the grain a bit... the grain in real life is a bit more subdued... not a bad thing, just more subtle than is shown here. Oh well.
