I was afraid you'd say that... GasMan :eyebrow:
I'm four string guy all the way, but I have been thinking of a fiver and it would most likely be an AC at some point.
Oh, I guess I didn't mention the B string yet... I'm sure it's been mentioned here already, so let's just call this "re-enforcement", but the B string on at least the LG is really great! VERY musical and focused.

Tonight I pretty much have to pack up for the gig tonight as soon as I get home from work, but I'll try to see if I can get a quick basement test of the LM in before I do. The room we're playing tonight is pretty acoustically rude until the dance floor fills up, so I'd like to get a sample of the LM and A/B before that.

Yeah, I'm here to help any time, my friend. Just ask me about an AC any time. ;)

I have the LM in hand. Got here ok. Definitely a lot more green than that picture. I'd say it's really more of a tropical lagoon green (if that makes sense) than a teal color. I'll weigh it and do a quick sound check before the gig tonight. Feels a little heavier than the LG... not too much tho. The maple in the neck looks great... not necessarily figured, just really pretty grain. It's a little older tho... it's a full NYC build, no build date on the plate, S/N B0072. Looks like somebody's been slappin' on it some too. :) Got just a tiny bit of the usual fine surface stuff below the G string towards the horn. :)

Does it have a nitro or poly coat? I mind Nitro a lot less when there is a pickguard, since there will invariably be slap/pop scratches in that area below the G string. I was putting some pretty serious wear marks on my former F Bass in that area. Nitro is not impervious at all.

As for color, I've found Digital camera's have a hard time nailing the accurate color in flash, indoor photo's.

I believe all the LM's are poly. At least this one is.

Yep. It's a "white balance" issue. VERY common among consumer and prosumer models. I combat this all the time. I'll try to make sure my pics are more accurate.

Ok ...So Vic is most likely out on his gig with the AC LG5 (CAO/Dalbergia) and the LM5.

Any wagers as to which Alleva Vic prefers? We'll find out soon enough no doubt.

LG5
LM5

I expect we will hear that the room acoustics sucked since he already alluded to that. That makes it it hard to draw definitive conclusions. What a fun night! I look forward to hearing Vic's impressions.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that CAO LG5 is going to come in first place. But who knows? Vic tends to favor Modern sounding basses, so maybe the Ash/Maple LM5 will come closer to the tone he covets.

You're right, I'm just heading out to the gig, but I did a quick plug in test, so I at least have a basement sample done. On the room, I'll make sure to play both once the room fills up, and plus, how well a bass does in a crappy room is also important, so keep that in mind. Finally, remember I'm also taking the MV5 with me, so it's not just about AC's tonight. :) That said, I'll stay on topic, it's just sometimes good to use other more familiar brands to help contrast, since MV5's are much better known than AC's... at least for now.

I can say one thing tho... if I haven't already... an AC 5 string is definitely in my future. I have at least determined that. It just boils down to which one and when. :)

I'm confused. Some 4 string Alleva's have a rounded fingerboard at the body, but this one looks squared off. Is that standard with binding? Or just how this one was built? Strikes me just a little odd considering all of the vintage details Jimmy nails. Just curious. It's not bad and that bass is STUNNING! Freaking amazing!

Andrew's standard 4 has 21 frets not 20 like the bass he bought from Tom. With the 21st fret I overhang the fingerboard. A squared off edge just looks cleaner. I do however at some point plan on extending the neck heel and discontinuing the overhang. My five strings have 21 frets but no overhang, hence the curved end.

Well, my pick was for the LM5 or the Sadowsky but in my pm's with Vic he seems to really be digging the LG5. Only time will tell! (BTW, shouldn't Vic be back from the gig yet and typing at his keyboard?)

As we kill time until Vic's review, I was wondering what you all thought about how AC basses sound recorded vs. in a live mix.

It seems as though Sadowskys seem to be a heavy favorite with some friends of mine for live mixes (keep in mind, though, that none of them have played an AC). However, with the difference in live sound vs. recorded sound I was wondering what you thought about how the LG performs vs. the LM and maybe even a Sadowsky in a Live vs. Recorded setting.

I need to do some more listening, but if I had to make a choice right now, it'd be the LG... believe it or not. That LM is a really great bass, but the LG just has something more. It seemed to cut the mix a little better, and have a bit more "life" to it in general. Tony, that's an amazing bass. I hope the one I get has the same magic. The LM is a great bass, but at least that particular one, just doesn't quite have as much of what I'm looking for. There's a certain midrange growl that the LG seems to have just a touch more of. I think the 60's spacing is adding just a bit more beef to the tone, and that's part of what I'm hearing. The rest is probably the Alder body.

When I got the LM, it had some fresh AC SS's on it, and to be very honest, I didn't like them. They may have been a bad set, but the B and E were kinda' lifeless and the E actually seemed fairly "thuddy" to me. I happened to have a set of nickel DR LoRiders on hand, so I threw them on. That also allowed me to more directly compare to the LG since it had nickels as well (which are also AC strings, and felt/sounded great, so the SS's were probably just a weak set). The DR's completely fixed everything.

The LG (again) is 9.3 pounds and the LM weighs in at 9.5 (which is also what Jimmy said it weighed on his scale), though as so many people have said here, somehow, it didn't feel that heavy on a strap. Either one was fine for me. Just outa' curiosity, I'd like to know what Ken's really weighs on a postal scale. He says his is 8.5, which would be particularly light for a full size J5 ash bodied bass... I wonder if it's actually a bit heavier and just feels like less (as these did to me).

Here's the thing... I've spoken to Jimmy many times on the phone and been very honest regarding the stuff I've generally liked (woods, basses, tone) and he also recommended I go with the LG. Well, so far, he's right.

Right now, my only regret is not discovering these sooner.

Doin' a happy dance! ...because my LG5 completion should be right around the corner! :hyper: :D :hyper:

Thanks Vic! Curious however in the scheme of things where you ranked your NYC Sadowsky Ash/Maple 5? Clearly a different vibe I would expect. But I know you dig that bass too. So how did the Sadowsky compare with the LG5?

You should be very happy. I might, however, be a bit concerned for your VJ's. :)

At the risk of drawing a bit of fire here, the Sadowsky, as most know, is a more aggressive instrument, so it cut the mix a lot better and was my favorite of the three, BUT, also as many have said, the AC's are designed with different goals, to remain faithful to a traditional tone, and they do this in spades. I simply must have one of these. It just felt so great to have such a sweet, pure, and honest J tone, and also have all the playability and consistency improvements afforded by the attention to detail of a luthier like Jimmy.

I love having to make the decision on what bass to take to church, sadowsky or Alleva-Copollo. :D

Ha! I have the very same dilemma, but if I have to have a dilemma, it's one I can accept.

I took my Sadowsky and AC to record today with just one track penciled in for the AC. I ended up using it on four tracks because it killed tonally. The Sadowsky has already seen its fair share of the work on the project, though.

im suprised too that teal bass is 9.5. i played it a couple months ago and also thought it felt lighter than that. that one didnt really do it for me. even with the dead strings, i liked ethan farmers custom lm5 a lot more. that teal sounded alot like my old hotwire 5 string when it had aeros and a j retro in it. great sounding basses, but sounded light to me. im looking forward to him building an 11 pound lm5;)
