How tight is the tension on the DRs? I've tried a couple brands of flats that had really high tension and they were a bit much for me.

I found the feel of the DR's to be tight, but playable.
I haven't used flats often enough, so i don't have anything to compare them to.

The HI Beams are quite low tension, I assume due to the round core. They really feel great.. not floppy, but there's some give in the feel. The Lo Riders, etc., with the more traditional hex core design have a similar feel to the Sadowsky strings, etc.... relatively stiff and tight. IMO and IME.

I just LOVE the sound of the DR Hi Beams (steel roundwounds) on my LM5. Smooth as silk, with plenty of grind!

thank you so much Ken, Yeah it is a Motown machine... Not only that, but it may only weigh 7.5 pounds and i LOVE that..
Jimmy is making a new PU for me to try that is more vintage voiced..... Dave from Aguilar has tried one out already , and i have not heard the report yet. But I am looking forward to it. I think Jason Langley has already tried the new Pup and likes it..
Jimmy is just so busy right now.

Lanice Morrison who plays bass for Michael McDonald's band bought a kbp5 almost exactly like mine.. I went to go see him when he was in town.. the bass sounded huge and focused...
He liked it so much he got another for his son... i think it will be a special never before Alleva custom color..
I cant wait for jimmy to "get er gone" and post a pic of the new color....
Maybe for NAMM?

Kirk, that KBP-5 is just amazing looking. I LOVE that bass!!!!

Cool! Jimmy has a lot going on at the moment.

The LG5 should be here sometime today. It will be frustrating to let it sit in the box and warm up for a few hours due to the cold weather we are having in Detroit today, but I should be able to cranker 'er up later tonight and see 'what is what'!

Oh you have way more patients than i do..
I cant wait to see pics..I saw that bass and it was a beauty.
And i bet it is cold by you.
It has been in the 20s this week here in texas.
I have been moving and was so tired i spaced and i left my Nitro finished kbp4 in the cold garage...then brought it in last night and opened the gig bag.. ooopsss.. it has warmed now but im afraid to take a peak. .it may have aged 26 years overnight with finish checking....
Honestly though the Nitro is pretty durable but poly is way tougher as you know... and has a certain look that nothing can compare too... its like the difference between looking at the Denny's Grand Slam picture on the menu and then actually having it being served to you... The Nitro looks organic..
Post pics when you can.. I cant wait to see it

I received my Ice Blue RA-5 today. Holy sh!+...:D:D
It's absolutely beautiful...100% perfect fit and finish.
I'll try take a pic and post it later.

I haven't had a chance to plug it in yet (my wife has a bad cold and is napping for a while).:eyebrow:

What, you didn't know that RA stood for Rumbling Alarmclock? ;) :D

Okay...I have spent a little time with my new baby!:hyper:
I'm havin an early Christmas! The RA-5 is freaking awesome.
It's a little heavy...probably about 9-1/2+lbs. I might
have to get a Comfort Strapp. The LM-5 and the RA-5
are the same but different (to quote my Vietnamese friend):D
The LM-5 is Super growly and the RA-5 is more articulate
and better at slap tones...(I'm not very good with my thumb):(
if that makes any sense.
My LM-5 is kind of an Odd-Ball. It has a Northern Ash body
with an Indian Rosewood Fretboard.

It's been a REALLY long day...so maybe I can do more of an
in depth review/comparison of the LM-5 and the RA-5 later.
Anyway...here are some pics of the RA-5.:D
Sorry for the bad pics.
Dan

+1 Dan... beautiful!

My LG5 went 'missing off the grid' for a couple of days:eek: It was a little scary that it wasn't even showing up as being picked up in the Fedex system, even though it had been picked up from Brian's shop. Brian did a great job of hunting it down, and it's now due for delivery tomorrow. Whew! I guess this is part of the joy of shipping right before Christmas!

And this entire time I thought you were jamming away, happy as a clam!:bassist:

Good things come to those who wait (that's BS) but it makes people who are waiting feel better:D
