Just an update -

I posted my horror story regarding a stolen AC a few days ago. The shipping company has agreed to compensate me for my loss - less an insurance excess premium. I think I sounded annoyed enough to worry them when I talked about legal action. I walk away out of pocket but only for a couple of hundred dollars. This is a barely ok outcome (better than nothing) although I'm still hopeful some idiot will try to sell an AC on Craiglist or at a Nashville Pawnbrokers.

So an Alleva Coppolo Jazz Standard 4 string, sherwood metallic green, B0011 is still out there somewhere. If you see it up for sale anywhere, just let me know.

The 'hit of the last GTG' with the Alleva, along with the TecAmp rig, was the Aguilar DB112 x 2 with Thunderfunk rig. That rig really brought out the best in that sort of 'modern meets old school' sort of thing that the Alleva LM with stainless steel roundwounds gives you.

My favorite rig is still my old 410UL with the LMII.... warm, fat and grindy! That's the rig that usually gets the most smiles with the Alleva (lot's of 'that's what a J Bass should sound like' sort of comments at GTG's... but it stays at a different location these days).

I'm very happy with the low B on my A-C, but I just bought a couple sets of stainless steel D'Addarios that include a 0.135 B string, based on the guitar analogy: a number of guitarists with wonderful sounds -- Hendrix, SRV, many of the jazz guys, I think -- supposedly use[d] extremely heavy strings (I know, and some tune[d] down to Eb to compensate) and I just thought I'd give it a try. Let's see what a low B that's over a third of a centimeter in diameter can do. It may be more like a steel rod than a string.

My current rig is a Warwick Hellborg Preamp, Eden 1250 Poweramp and an Aguilar GS410. When Ive played through is with an LG5 with an Indian Rosewood board its just sounded sooo good, so hopefully mine with the Brazilian will sound that little bit better! I'll take a photo of the rig when the bass gets here

Here's what I predict.

D'addrios are stiff to begin with..... That things going to feel good, you can tug it!

I hear more fundamental in the tone with the big string.

I think the compromise will be in the clarity ( thinner is clearer) and how far up the string you can play functionally ( that warbly thing that seems to start around F).. If it's a maple board you might get different results the delbergia.

The fretboard's Indian rosewood. Those would be some fairly significant tradeoffs. I frequently play the low B string up to A, and clarity is always an issue with low frequencies anyway, just due to the physics of the matter (although "Physics, schmysics," as one of our siblinghood said recently).

Hey guys,

I just bought my first Alleva-Coppolo, a KBP-4, that should be here in a couple of days. What kind of flats are you guys using on your Allevas? I have a set of TI jazz flats I'm going to put on it when I get it. I love the four year old set of TI flats on my 70's Precision, but I wasn't digging the new set on my other P. They sounded way too scooped to me. I thought it was the Nordy pickup, but I put a new set of DR rounds on it and it was mid-present and punchy. I'm guessing I need to break them in with some good ol finger funk.

I'm definitely going to try the TI's first, but does anyone recommend any other kind of flats for a KPB-4? I really like the low tension of the Thomastiks.

I don't use any flats but Sadowsky now I have used them on my Standards and my LG5 and love them. They are snappier than most other flats I have used but still really warm and smooth. Perfect! The tension is great and they have all the thump you could ever want. I have a set on my Sadowsky P now and it is the best P sound I have ever gotten! Try a set, you won't be sorry!

Try the DR Flats ... I really dug them on a KBP 4.

I have the Thunderfunk 550 with an Epifani UL310. Seems to do the trick. I am interested in hearing the ACs played through the Aguilar stuff though

Thanks Tommixx. I tried the Sadowsky flats on my old Hamer Cruise fretless and I liked them a lot. How do they age?

I have played my Standard 4, my LG5 and the Modern 4 I had through an Aguilar DB750 and a multitude of cabs including DB112, GS112, Bergantino NV610 and NV215, Epi UL210 and UL410, EA NL210 and NM410, Accugroove El Whappo, and let me say that they sounded good with all of them. My favorites were the El Whappo, the NV610 and the NV215, and the DB112 by a pretty good margin over the others. The DB112 was probably the most surprising to me and I could see a pair of them being one hell of rig! I also have tried the same cabs with a Thunderfunk TF550 and TF750 and the TF750 was just insane good!

I'm using the TI flats on my KPB-5 and am getting a LOT of positive comments. I also have them on a Lakland 55-94 - they are just great strings.

How tight is the tension on the DRs? I've tried a couple brands of flats that had really high tension and they were a bit much for me.

I found the feel of the DR's to be tight, but playable.
I haven't used flats often enough, so i don't have anything to compare them to.
