My LG5 went 'missing off the grid' for a couple of days:eek: It was a little scary that it wasn't even showing up as being picked up in the Fedex system, even though it had been picked up from Brian's shop. Brian did a great job of hunting it down, and it's now due for delivery tomorrow. Whew! I guess this is part of the joy of shipping right before Christmas!

Dude the same thing just happened to me! I had my Alleva sent 3-day Express through FedEx and I hadn't gotten an update in two days. It's supposed to be delivered today and it still hadn't updated since it left Memphis two days ago. I was about to freak out, but its now showing my bass is at the sort facility in Dulles. I hope it still comes today. This is the most expensive bass I've ever bought. Its a little nerve wracking having it out of my control.

In the case of my bass, given the Christmas crunch, the 'two day air' stuff had already gone out for the day by the time the pickup driver returned to the depot for the day. I guess they stored those packages somewhere, and they forgot about them. Hence, it was never scanned into the system.

It was scary, since there was literally no formal record of the bass ever existing in Fedex's system. It really seems to me that they need to institute a scan at EVERY pickup, to at least document that they have the package.

If Fedex misses the level of service you paid for, I believe you are eligible for a full refund.

Just a few sets of Nickels......I know not such a big deal.:o

In any case I can't wait to get a set of Nickels on there as that is what I am really used to and since I haven't ever played my LG5 with anything but steels I'm not sure how it is going to change.

Not to bore you guys but as you might know I have a very special passive Lakland US JO4 with Fralins and it's strung with Nickels. You can dig into this bass and it only gets better, a little bit of almost an overdriven tone out of the pickups when you want to take it that far. The LG5 with steels has such an unbelievable slap tone and fingerstyle it is nice but you just can't dig in and get the same thing out of it even in passive mode, there is a crossing point if you dig to hard. I am hoping the nickels get me closer, if not that will be cool. In any case the bass is awesome.

Some other factors could be the fact that the JO is almost 10 years old and has been played daily for at least as long as I've owned it. Also I am still learning my way around the LG5, only been with me a week with 2 gigs under my belt with another tonight. I can say on the gig the bass was unreal and even if I get the nickels early today I'll wait until after the gig to change them out I like them broken in a little bit.

EDIT: Still working on mastering the perfect pickup height, I think I'm almost there but it's not perfect.

Let us know how that works. I always found the DJ, and to a lesser extent, the JO to really grind when you dig in, where the Alleva is a touch more refined, so I hear what you are saying there. My DJ was just GRINDY when pushed.

The LG5 is in Detroit. We are in the middle of a pretty good blizzard at the moment, so who knows when it will show up today (or not!).

Steels are an interesting experiment for me. I am a creature of habit and generally am very slow to accept change. I had been using EB Hybrid Slinkys since the mid 90s. I had bought an SR5 back then it was strung with them I liked them allot and never really gave anything else a try until about 6 months ago.

Ken I'm pretty excited about your delivery as well. I hope Jimmy remembered to sprinkle it with that magic saw dust.

I've mentioned this in other threads but should mention it here. I don't love laklands just the one I own, I've spent allot of time looking for the sister to mine and none of them come close, maybe they ran out of dust when the real Joe Os left the factory? I am convinced there is something different and if I knew exactly what it was I'd probably be making basses for a living.

This LG5 is fairly agressive in a 70s kind of way in comparison, which is cool I think it's a combo of the hard RW board and steel strings. I think it also may mellow over time, just a guess though.

Every great bass sounds very special not plugged in, it's apparent Jimmy knows exactly what he's doing, his pre just helps to support that rather then change it.

+1 I've been quite impressed with literally every Skyline DJ I've played, and equally unimpressed with every Skyline JO that I've played. I've never played the US version of the JO though.

And +1 to your description of that particular LG tone. It is MUCH more similar than different to my LM when we A/B'd them on numerous occasions. Mike had nickels on that bass at the time, and I had Dr. Hi Beams, and they still sounded pretty close. The LG was a touch fatter down low, and a touch less present in the upper mids, but it was subtle. That's one of the reasons I like that bass you have so much... it's almost the 'best of both worlds'... PLENTY of snap, but also a nice warmth and a bit more push in the low mids that the typical ash/maple instrument like my LM.

I think you really have a good one there!

I do like Laklands very much but I do find that every bass produced is not equal, same goes for any other brand of bass I've owned. I loved your Jo4 and should have kept it .. I know that now. My current Sad has that special bit of magic, so I'm lucky again.

I've always been a nickel string guy but I finally tried SS on my Sad and it was an improvement, so again, I think it depends on the particular instrument and how things react together. By going to SS I lost the blurry harmonic on my E string 7th 8th fret I always had with nickels. Shrug.

It's nice to own an instrument that has been played by others, it helps to confirm that I'm not crazy and helps me understand what I think I hear. I've gone back and read the old thread where Ken and Mike were comparing them (LG/LM) a few times while I was waiting, now I get it, the tonal space between an LG and LM are normally further then with this bass. I wasn't sure how they were meeting in the middle but after playing it and hearing all this I see that. Your comments have me thinking that the nickels will have a smaller effect then I was originally thinking.

I guess the grass is always greener but having an LM and an LG on the way ain't so shabby! One might call that the best of both worlds!
