After many posts from cats using nickel string on their LG5's, i became curious & wondered if i had missed something when i had strung mine with nickels.

I've been a stainless guy for sooooo long & have become particularly fond of the DR Extra Life string since I lent my bass to DR for the first Bass Player Live when they were debuting the "Red Devils".

So ... i visited my friends from DR at the NAMM show & got 2 nickel sets, one set of Nickel Low Riders & one set of Sunbeams.

Wow ... I'm completely sold !!! The Nickels seem to have so much more "ping" and presence to them ... i can't believe that I haven't tried them sooner.

I've been wearing out the Lo Riders for the last week + and look forward to stringing up with the Sunbeams soon. Sean Michael Ray, bass player for Maxwell, raved to me about Sunbeams @ Bass Player Live this year and I look forward to checking them out.

Thanks to all of my fellow TB'ers for sharing their experiences with Nickel Strings on their LG5's.

I don't have an LG, but I LOVE Sunbeam Nickels on my Alder/Rosewood Nordy. Love the feel and the tone, and they last long too.

[Laughing!] I've spent the weekend sleeping (I'm dog sick), and playing the Heart Breaker. Just today I told my wife I think I've grown accustomed to the coated strings you had on her and I like 'em. How ironic to now read this! I'll play it a bit more and get that sound in my ears, then switch over the the nickles you sent with the bass and compare.

I'm looking forward to trying the Lo Rider Nickels on mine (I bough a few sets a while back)! The Hi Beams just won't wear out. I'll be interested in hearing your take on the Sunbeams. The feedback I've gotten on those is mixed. The Hi Beams to seem to be voiced perfectly for an ash/maple bass. We will see about the Nickel Lo Riders for the LG. The Hi Beams sound good on it (as you heard in my clip), but it's a little too much 'modern meets vintage' for my ear.

If you like the Lo Riders try a set of Sadowsky Blue Nickels for sure. I used to use D'Addario and then DRs for many years. I tried the Sadowsky Black Nickels and liked them and stuck with them on my Sadowskys but continued to use both Lo Riders and Sunbeams on a few different basses until the Blue Nickels came out and now I only use Blue Nickels on all my basses except for a couple that I have Sadowsky Flats on. The Blue Nickels are zingy enough but pretty quiet over steels. I HATE any noise at all from my frets or strings and the Blue Nickels is the first string I have used that is as close to noise free as I think you can get. I play very cleanly and my recorded tone is the best it has ever been. The tension is excellent and the feel of the string is a LOT smoother than the DRs. Give them a shot...PM sent!

Anyone remember that "Fender" 51 Precision 5 string I built?
Well, oddly enough, I don't like the feel/sound of my Favorite Flats, LaBella 760FL's on there. Love them on my 51 4 string, and precisions. The only other flats I have experience with are DA Chroems...which are nice enough, but don't sound "old school" at all.

Tom and all, can you quantify the Sad flats in terms of tone and feel? Everyone knows the LaBella sound: Motown. But, even the light FL's are relatively high tension. I would never use the mediums, or Jamerson Bridge Cables! Other Flat suggestions weclomed and appreciated!

Since it may benefit others I think I will post my answer here. The Sadowsky flats are brighter than most any other flat I have ever heard and IMO they have better definition to the note as a result. They are still thumpy but never get wooly sounding to me. They are very clear and I even occasionally slap on them! The tension is excellent and is very close to their Blue Label nickels to me. They are as smooth as any I have used and are very quiet. I have not used any other flat since the first time I tried a set! I would highly suggest trying them if you like flats!

The NAMM basses returned today (the dealers use cartage for transportation to & from NAMM so it takes a minute for them to come back)

(For those who don't know, Jimmy is revamping the line & restructuring the names of the basses by finish option & fingerboard option.
So far, my partial understanding is: Standard = Urithane. Classic = Nitrocellulose. Supreme = Upgraded Fingerboard (Dalbergia).
I'm sure these aren't the only things.
As the website is redone, these new names & their features will become more clear.)

I have learned to trust Roger and here is what he says:

"The finest flatwound bass string, period. Superb on fretless basses or for that classic Motown sound."

I am not certain if they are steel or not...They are very quiet and feel better than anything else I have ever used!

.... because Booker King (NYC bassist for Lila Downs, Corey Glover, Dean Brown, Grant Green Jr., Kelis, etc, etc ...) ordered this specific combo that Jimmy hadn't made yet.
Booker has ONLY been a client of Mike Tobias for the last 10 + years.
Jimmy, being both a fan & friend of Mike's, was both psyched & flattered that Booker was pro active about adding an Alleva Coppolo to his collection. Thus, the naming of the basses.
I have to say that Booker is on to something. This is the wood combo of his MTD's, which all sound great.
The 2 basses that Jimmy made like this (ash body & neck, maple board) both sounded amazing ... and different from any other Coppolo basses. IMO, they have more presence in the mid range and are very "alive" sounding.

+1 on the Sadowsky Flats... I have them on my 67 jazz.. whewww.

Rogers Low B string on his Rounds may be the nicest piano sounding Low B that i have heard.. similar to the Labella HRS Low B.....

As nickles go i have had real good success with Daddarios on my LG5 but the past year i have been using DR Hi Beams.. they seem to last a long time with a nice tension. I only wish i could get a .130 tapered B string.. I have special ordered those from Dadarrio..

I am using Alleva Coppolo strings on my kbp4.
