Wow that sunburst is killer! Just enough red and yellow, and not vague, too brown, too yellow, or too red like a lot of sunbursts you see today. The grain of the alder is beautiful, as is that dark rosewood. Nice bass!!
Thanks! Yeah, his "standard" (Indian) rosewood is definitely nothing run of the mill. I loved the DN on the COJ LG5 Tony originally had, but just couldn't personally justify the upgrade, so I asked Jimmy about some particularly dark standard rosewood. He told me he had a whole palette of stuff he got that was from the 70's, and it was "old even then". I know the ultra discerning fingerboard connoisseurs such as tommixx might be sticklers for the DN, but for me, I know I'll be happy with it tonally, and the look is perfect. so ive said it before, but the A/C pre is the truth. i just installed a lollar neck pickup in my slab board 62 jazz and i was recording some clips to compare to some old clips i had with the stock neck pickup. since i never play my old fenders without the A/C pre i thought id record a clip with the pre. check out the with and without clips. this box is a mandatory with old fenders. ive got a sad outboard as well and the Coppolo pre just works.

seriously, if you dig passive than no pre is going to do it for you, but i really dig what it does to an old j when playing with a band. just a personal preference thing. the sad sounds even more modern and juiced than this. something like a j retro.....forget about it. unless you have some really warm pickups with one of those, its thin and super scoop city.the bass was halfway up and the treble was around a third of the way up.

I agree on your Alleva versus Sadowsky comparison all the way... organic and smooth versus bigger and more aggressive and more 'actively voiced' if that makes any sense. However, I wouldn't put the J-Retro in the same universe as these two myself. Every J with a J-Retro I've played made it feel like I was playing the preamp. It's a great preamp, but the voicing is so wide, modern and 'electronic' that I weep every time I see a Lakland DJ with one installed. Even with the knobs set to neutral, it sounds 'goosed' to me.

the two pres werent as different as i thought they would be. i had an ag 2 band outboard and boxed that back up within 5 minutes so i didnt really know what to expect with the sad. playing the same basses through them let me really hear how they are at least in the same family. the sads lows go a little lower and the highs are a little higher and prettier, but not drastically so. it does have a bit more of an upper mid scoop than the ac does. again though, subtle. i can see how the differences in the two instruments (construction and pickup voicing) can make them sound like theyre pretty different. a used sad pre really is a huge value though. i paid more than double for my used ac than the used sad.
the retro really was from another family completely if you are using your average single coil. however, that hotwire 5 with nord singles didnt sound hyped up at all. super organic. even the guy i sold it to commented on its tone being pretty vintage and warm sounding.
How does the Aguilar OBP-3 stack up against the Sadowsky, Alleva, and J-Retro? I love the sound of Paul Turner's LG-5 Classic, and I assumed he had the Alleva pre installed in it. However, I recently found out that he has the OBP-3 in it. Here are some pictures:

Excellent points.... everything interacts so much that it's hard to generalize. I do really like the 'transparency' of the Alleva pre when set at the neutral setting. I rarely do more than boost the low end by 10 or 20%, and it just fattens the tone while not sucking the J out of it. I really like it.
I would think the more mellow Nord singles (at least the ones I've heard) would work better with the J Retro than the Aero's and Fralins I typically hear it with in those Laklands. With the Aero singles used in the DJ and the J-Retro, that's too much of a good thing even for me
I've never heard the OB-3 in a bass with single coils, but have lot's of experience with it in various other basses (Drozd, Stambaugh) etc. with split coils or dual coils, etc.
I personally didn't dig it. The low shelving point is very low, and the treble shelving point is super high (like 10k or something). I assume they did that so the bass and treble wouldn't sit on top of the switchable mid when set high or low. It sounded very pure and quite hi fi. I prefer a two band with a big more meat to it myself. It's a quality pre though, pure personal taste.
