I wouldn't mind something similar to the Ernie Ball wheel, although Cliff recently changed the to a larger Allen size.
Back to short/medium scales, the basses still need to maintain the same ratios of construction to avoid neck dive. I find a lot of short scales to simply be a guitar with a bass neck. Sure, the neck dive generally isn't as bad as something full scale, but the left hand grip can really slow things down.
