Hey, don't knock 4-strings! Tom Bowlus,
Not knocking them (I have one that I am gigging on tonite). It's just a poke at the seeming fact that most customs seem to be 5 or more strings. Fact is: All 5 and more string basses have a 4 string built into it. You can't get away from them. Yours is a great looking example, indeed. Looks like Walnut and EMG's? What do it sound like?

Especially if the string spacing is the same from 4 to 5 -- had to make sure that was the case, as I switch between both often in a 3 hour gig.

Perhaps, but I my band plays a number of songs in drop-D tuning, so 4-strings with a D-tuner are useful (for me, at least). Of course, neither of my Clements have a D-tuner...

I have been doing a lot more singing with my current band of late, and at least with my meager skills, I find it easier to sing and play on a 4-string.

Plus, I already have two killer 5-string fretless basses, and a killer short-scale fretless 4-string, so I thought that a 34" 4-string fretless would be a cool addition to the herd. :cool:

I like that particular EMG pickup, as it allows both single-coil and hum-canceling operation. To my ears, in single-coil mode, that pickup is a bit more open and extended than what I typically think of as an "EMG sound." The preamp is a nice, with two bands of boost/cut, and it's not too powerful (meaning, you can twist it pretty much all the way in either direction, and still get usable options).

Another thing about the low end on PJB gear, it does not "bloom" the way conventional speakers do. Phil designed them not to do this. Instead, they have this articulate attack that extends all the way down to the lowest notes. At first, it sounds like there are less lows, but when we measure Phil's cabs, they have more low end content than most cabs. The difference is that quick attack to the start of the note. It is almost odd at first to hear this on the lower notes, but it's pretty cool, I think. For sure, PJB gear is not going to appeal to everyone, but if you want a fairly accurate representation of what your basses actually sound like, PJB gear is a very good bet, IME/IMHO.

Taming the high C w/ a set of Rotosound nickel flatwounds 6 string set. I will have a set tomorrow to try on #122. I used to play a P w/flats for years and got away from that so going to try it. Got the Q tuners adjusted for more bass frequency.

I can do the backing vocal thing on a 5-ver, no problem. It's when I'm singing lead that I like to play 4-strings, when convenient.

Soooooooooooo I decided to call the Phil Jones company regarding a general question about the amp. Who do you think answers the phone???????

Yep, the man himself Phil Jones.

What a NICE guy. I told him about Tom's basses and sent him some info too via email. When he heard that I purchased a BG-150 he mentioned to me that he is currently developing a 'powered' extension cabinet (~250 watts) for the Flightcase series, BG-150 and BG-250. While I have no need for it it does open some possibilities for others.
