That looks like a great gig GBM. Just out of curiosity why do you like the smaller fret wire? Does that make it easier to play? Is there a disadvantage? Sorry for the naive questions, I just never really thought about it before.

To me the mandolin wire is the balance between fretted and fretless in feel and sound. Fretted (to me) with jumbo frets are too clunky, metallic sounding. Fretless saps too much of the notes power. Disadvantage? The mandolin frets can be harder to feel with your fingers under the strings and you can lose your placement like on fretless, so you have to concentrate more than with jumbo frets. (To my ears) mandolin frets let more of the wood shine through the notes without losing the attack. I think that is about it.
I have changed the electronics to passive Fatstacks in series pots are volume / tone / push-pull HB / SC and these mandolin frets just completed the whole package of what #196 Anne was meant to be. I was seriously thinking of selling it and building another but that is now way on the back burner (for now). #196 ain't going nowhere without me!! (Yes, great gig. That show is now about 6 years running).

Hello everyone. Happy Holidays
Just to let you all and TC know, rec'd #061 and what a Bass. I have had many diff bass guitars since I started playing in 1969. From P's to J's, Ricks, EBO's, EB3's . Old ones, new ones. The list goes on and on. Currently been playin Yamaha Attitude in stereo. I love that bass, however, I have to say 061 will take its place. I changed the neck from the fretless to the fretted one to do a gig this past weekend. What a neck. Just awesome. I'm afraid I can't go back to the Yamaha. lol There isnt anything I dont like about it. It's light, it came with fretted and fretless necks and they both are beautiful.. Its probably the best bass I've ever played on. great job Tom.. Great Job.. All I need is another body and get a much better playin fretless. I'm excited, cant u tell.

SKB case a bit of overkill but I couldn't fine anything that would fit closer.

Now to find some foam.

I need lots of practice with that fretless neck as I never had one before. is the switch to fretless a long process.. I love the sound but my accuracy needs lots of practice... such a beautiful neck though. Tom, how do I go about getting quote for another body? thanks

You said it twice in your post. The key to fretless is practice practice practice. Some take longer than others. I will practice in the dark...makes your ears keener faster once the fingering memory kicks in. Get use to the instrument first and then learn the different techniques as you spice to taste.

SKB sells the "cubed" foam they use in their custom cases. It's pre cut into little cubes which are stuck together, but easy to tear apart. You can make a custom pocket of any size or shape with them.

Possibly a better (and cheaper) alternative is to buy some fairly dense foam, cut it to shape, wrap it in black velour, and glue it into the case. Electric carving knives do a great job of cutting foam.

Hello.. I have been lurking here for a while now as well as stalking the Clement blog watching for out for his next creation.. I'm almost ready to take the plunge and interested in the Phoenix body style but would really like to get a better sense as to its size against a real person.. I leaning towards a smaller body size since I am recovering from frozen shoulder and like to keep my arm tucked in as close to my body as possible.. One of my current basses is an acoustic that I cant even play now without shoulder pain after 5 or ten minutes. If anyone has any pics or videos of this body style in action so I can see how it fits with the body it would be greatly appreciated.
