I don't know Mac. My PC is dying too. Bad hard drive unknown error. Ordered new hard drive and going to increase memory double since I will be in there. These will about max upgrade what it can do without having to buy new complete system. Backed up what I could. Waiting. Last night it about kicked the bucket but we got it booted again and left it in standby. Hopefully we can launch from there til the new stuff gets here to swap out.
Looks like we are treading water together, Tom.
Best wishes and prayers. Peace. david

Take the computer to an Apple store. Depending on what happened they should be able to recover most if not all of your data.

Similar thing happened with my PC a few months ago. It just would not boot up at all. All of my photos (thousands of pics of my kids) were on there. What I did was removed the corrupted hard drive and plugged it into an external hard usb drive adaptor which can be got on the 'bay for five bucks. Then, I plugged it into my wifes computer and just copied everything over.

After all that, I went and bought a 2TB backup drive. Should have done that a long time ago.

Backups are key, hard drives fail, Mac and PC. Even solid state drives are not fully reliable and they can withstand more physical abuse than standard hard drives. That sucks Tom, there are recovery services however they can cost a lot depending on the issue.

OK, when it comes to the bass photos, I think if we all chip in we can probably get the photos back. Just means everyone has to pack their progress photos in a zip file and send them back to you, Tom. :)
Unfortunately we can't help you with the vacation photos... :-(

I had the same thing happen to me a couple years ago. Half a year (fortunately not more) of photos including a vacation went missing. Since then, I have spread all my files on 5 different disks, with one main disk that's being mirrored weekly, and one irregular manual backup of the main disk. hehe I am hoping not three hard drives will crash on the same week! :-)
