I'm usually not big on green basses, but WOW! If the headstock matches - double WOW!! If Lakland stashed some 'Stars, they were prescient...

If that was the only bass I ever got to play from here on out I'd probably be OK with that.
I've made that for Elmer (evhest). Initially a custom body (mahogany Jaguar shape, raised midcenter as a Tbird), Allparts neck, Hipshot hardware, nice electronics and a fresh set of Darkstars (probably some of the few Fred has made this year...).
It's absolutly one of the most beautiful basses I've seen. And the sound of it is just...... heaven.

The P is my newest and my favorite, really like the darkstar bark as a single pickup!
Soon i am going to put together a Darkstar PJ jazz bass, Lindy fralin in the P position and Darkstar at the bridge (i already have the pickup) with a pair of stack knobs for controls!

Carlos i would LOVE to hear the Darkstar J and P audio side-by-side to compare!! Any chance you have something?

Do you have clips of your double DS P tone? I think this is my ideal configuration of DS on a Fender!
Unfortunately i do not a have anything right now, might record an A/B someday...
What i can tell you is that now that i have the P bass i really agree with Fred when he said he prefered those pickups in single pickup basses!
The P bass has a lot more grunt than the jazz even when only using the neck pickup and the placement is pretty much the same! (1cm difference)
If i had to do it all again i would probably only do a P, it just works better than a J I say that and before i got the Black P i was always a J guy, now i love my P and use it the most!
I have never been a dual pickup guy - simple, 1 pickup, 2 knobs - that works for me.
The Dark Star is so strong, I'm not sure I could tame two, especially a placement close to the neck. YMMV
Well its hard to put into words but i think the pickup "breaths" more when you only have one (sorry for the crappy analogy)!
When you have two you get this classic scooped sound when using both and IMO even if you put the volume of the bridge pickup off you still have some sort of loss/scoop through the pots etc..
The single one just has a more even tone to my ears and more grunt!
Fred had noticed that to and recommended i tried doing a single pickup bass, when we first exchanged emails, since a was a diehard Jazz Bass guy i still went for two...

Could the same effect be had with a pickup selector so you can completely cut the second pickup of the circuit, i dont know... Might be worth trying if you really want to go the Jazz bass route!
I do have to add that it is really not a massive difference, but it is there! It is even more noticeable when playing with a high gain (on my Mesa Scout) and a pick, the single pickup bass just has more harmonics, more body, more grunt...
Now some people will go all "its the wood or something" but really those two basses have the same body wood, same paint, same neck construction (both USA Fender post 08) the same bridge, same pots and cap and the pickup position (when using only the neck PU on the Jazz) is pretty much the same ( less than 1cm difference)

Indeed they do, but IMO with standard pickups you dont miss out as much as you do with Darkstars, maybe its something to do with the fact that they cover a wider spectrum or maybe its just darkstar Magic but it is a lot more noticeable when done with my two darkstared P and J than my standard P and J!
Maybe do the test when you get your new darkstared bass! You do have a Gold darkstared P if i remember correctly!
