I've been having my usual mess about with strings to find what works best for me. The JO flats that were on it sounded great but you never know what else is out there waiting for you until you try it.
I tried TI's jazz flats (my old favourites) but the A string is so skinny it would really need a new nut to work nicely, sound was OK but a little bright as those strings are very new. Tried D'addario roundwound nickels, very growly..like a chainsaw coming at you. Tried sadowsky flats (my other favourite) and they seemed very similar to the JO flats if a little brighter. Also tried Chromes and was expecting really great things...but meh, just doesn't work for me. Far too bright and metallic. I'm not sure I could bear them long enough to break them in. I want to know how they will change with age but I dunno...
So I finally ended up putting on a set of Picato flats I had spare...perfect! Really woody, clicky sort of weird sound...very dark but the Chi's seem sonically sensitive enough to bring out the subtleties. Very old skool, like a hofner or something, but not the same.
Very very happy with this bass. My Sadowsky does the P bass thing brilliantly, but this Decade is the sound I had in my head.
My only curiousity now is...what would darkstars be like![]()

Very nice, congratulationsHere's mine - a US Decade in Firemist Gold with matching headstock!
Well worth an experiment I'd say, especially as they are not too expensive. I did go back to the Nickel XL's and tried the Chromes and the Sadowskys again but I cannot argue with the facts...those Picato's sounds perfect for me.Nice update! Might have to try picato flats!
