Club Fbass (Part 10!)

I have a 34.5" BN5 born in Feb 1990 and it has been my main bass for 14 years. I have found that FBass strings are really the best option for me but would like to try to explore some other options. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has spent a bunch of time and money trying others out and was wondering if there is a general consensus as to what alternative to FBass strings works best on a BN5 to maintain that fat / crisp modern tone?

I just read a few posts down that Dean Markley XL's are decent... Fodera taper B standard .045-.125 seems like a close match??

Stainless steel DR's. The DDT aren't bad if you want to increase tension. I like the Matt garrison just try that E-C tuning. Im sure the 34.5 scale will work for that fodera set , but the DRs work really well even after they mellow out a bit. My fbass has the original 3+2 headstock as well.

The best thing you can do is use as many different brands as you can and then zero in on the flavour you're looking for. I use R. Cocco steels with my BN5 Studio and love them dearly. :)

I use FBass strings on my TBC as seen in my profile pic. They sound great but I have a heavy hand and often break them at the bridge. I can see some wear at the bridge from the tension and limited surface area of just the core. I'll need an alternative non-exposed core string for that bass as well. Or replace the bridge with something designed for exposed core strings but i'd prefer to not go down that path.

Hello Oleg,

I have tried the GR55 for a few days before buying the VB-99. The GR55 looked very promising on roland.com, etc. But what made me choose the VB99 over it was the fact that it was a HASSLE to blend your natural bass sound with that of the GR - very inconvenient IME. The VB99 has a button that allows for direct bass blend (on top of the convincing bass/amp sounds it offers). There are several threads dealing with the VB and GR from a bass player's perspective. I recommend you check them out if you plan on getting a GR55.

BTW, are there other FBass users out there that use a Roland synth unit (VB - VB99 - GR55)? What are your likes and dislikes ?

I was stringing my Cocobolo BN5 with my favorite strings (DR Hi-Beam) and snapped this pic without flash, here you can see the screen protectors. I use the universal one that you can cut to any size you want, I paid like $5 for a 3 pack.
This F-Bass sounds just plain amazing, it came with the F-Bass strings and sounded great, with the Hi-Beams I swear I had a eargasm :D

im starting a few string trials ...I have used Foderas 0.120"s and Circle K 0.118"'s(unable to use CK's with AC6 as not to be used as string through) and presently using the FBass 6xer set...love'm but Im thinking the tension/ gauge is a little high for me ...just ordered the following custom sets in anticipation for the AC6

Custom Fodera Stainless Steels: 0.110 / 0.085 / 0.070 / 0.050 / 0.034 / 0.028
Custom LaBella Super Steps SS: 0.115 / 0.095 / 0.075 / 0.060 / 0.040 / 0.029

Pedulla and sr 2000 are tapered they are a little thicker than exposed at the bridge. Roto sound have exposed cores.

I tried my friend's GR55 some months ago. Bass didn't sound really natural, but there are some presets that made me smile like scat :) But there was something wrong with it, some strings weren't caught by my GK-3b, but it works great with my V-bass. Don't know why it happened. I never tried VB99, but I was told that lots of bassists change their VB99 and V-bass for GR55.

What a great idea ( the screen protectors that is). Have you tried removing them ? Do they leave residue ? Thanks.

I just really noticed your screen name, and francoprof to me mean professeur de francais... hahaha.... and it's true that these screen protector things are a super great idea, and we all want to preserve our F's as pristine as possible, so every idea is worth a try... :hyper:
