It came down to price in the end...my finish cost more than the standard available finishes, but less than half what the exotic top costs. My next one might have the top...yes, already saving up for a fretted F.
You did and I thank you for that guidance, this is the bass of my dreams. The look of a Smith and the sound, flexibiliy and playability of the F, can't beat that.

My BNF is somewhat similar (fretted, Mac ebony, etc), but instead of moving the neck p/u (which I had considered), I actually just went with a bridge only. I have to say, I don't miss having a neck pickup at ALL. The bass sounds incredible with just the one, the preamp is super versatile, and I never get any hum or buzz even in single coil mode. My only regret is that I didn't get it in a 6er!
One other thing you might consider -- when you get the BNF model fretted, George defaults to using ash only, as opposed to the middle section of the fretless which is maple. I like this a lot, however, I also believe he can do different woods for the center block if you request it. I probably would've stuck with just ash, but mahogany could be cool too to warm up the sound a little. Just a thought.
What finish are you considering?
As much as my new BN6 is awesome I'm really not digging the case George sells, should I say gig bag. This is way to expensive an instrument to put in a gig bag, even a good one. Does anyone know of a quality hard case that will fit a BN6...?

It's truely a work of art once again... I'm so impressed at the artistic workmanship that the guys and gals at F do... I'm so glad to have re-entered this exclusive F club, and every time I see a new bass posted, I want to get another for myself.... hmmmmmm!!!!
