Club Fbass (Part 11!)

Yes it is! I've been playing the DayLights out of this Wonderful Instrument! But the person I traded with hadn't had a chance to check out the Ric I sent him in trade, so I didn't want to jump the gun until I was sure he was happy with the trade. He is! So!!!

I'll take some pics tonight. I have an audition next week and need to learn 20-something songs, so I have a GREAT excuse to play this baby ALOT!

And surely I misunderstand... but did you trade a Ric for a BN4?! Did you have to give cash as well?

I like Rics, don't get me wrong. My second bass I ever owned was a beautiful white and silver Ric, but it was no where in the same league as my BN5.

According to my Wife, the Art Director for an Ad Agency (MAD WOMEN?!?) the definition of a Logo is:

A name, symbol, or trademark designed for easy and definite recognition. So the Emblem/Symbol would be an acceptable logo.

Yeah, that's what they teach marketing majors in the business department as well. Even the Nike swoosh is a logo, as is the simple letters "IBM" when they are in the uniform color and font IBM has standardized on.

Not to derail the F-bass cab discussion, but I just saw this on Facebook. I really love the standard finish of the AC (and really really want one!!), but this blue is pretty sexy...

I saw that too -- and want one probably for the same reason you want one as well.

Moreover, the facebook post said it was the only one to ever leave the shop.

The thing is, I already have 3 AC6s, and all of them are gorgeous, so I'll never get a blue one I sure.

But I don't have a BNF6... [wink]

She's a Trans Black, but in the Bright Light she looks Very Brown!

The bass arrived fairly Dirty! And it looked like someone had put those awful Fake Inlays on this wonderful fret board! (Fake boobs are one thing, fake blocks are another!)

I did trade a Ric for this Fine BN4. Straight Up! But it was an exceptional Ric. ABSOLUTELY MINT Montezuma Brown (No. 300 of 300 from '06) with custom wound Toaster pickup/Horse Shoe pickup/ and VTC all wrapped in the Vintage Silver case.

I think it was a Good Trade for both of us. I'll not be parting with this Most XLNT F-Bass anytime soon!

Yeah, I used to work for an IBM reseller called Tricom. (AKA Trick 'Em!) They wrote the TriCom logo exactly like IBM did, with the Blue lettering on whatever Font that is. IBM SUED TriCom for copyright infringement! But our clever CEO talked to some Muckety-Muck from IBM in the hallways of the court house and pointed out that Tricom's sales were so high because our customers recognized that we WERE an IBM reseller because of the similarities in the logo's, and that was well worth allowing TriCom some "Poetic License". IBM dropped the suit...

BTW, that Ric is a looker for sure, but while I loved mine, I found it wasn't very flexible and didn't want to hang on to a one trick pony -- particularly when I had other ponies that did that same trick.

Were I better off at the time though, I probably would have hung on to it. It was a fun bass.

Yes, it's much better looking in person too. But even with the Thumb Rest I just can not play a Ric comfortably. I'm a Fingers Guy. On the other hand, the F-Word (As I've come to call the BN4) has good anchors on both pickups, (2 spots on the neck Pup!) and the heel of the neck A La Geezer Butler. I just can't play this bass enough! I think I know what a Crack-Head goes through now!!!

Just wanted to ask a question about "FINGER RAMPS"...

I did a quick search and found really nothing that answered my question.
As most of you know Fbass is building me a Fretted AC6...and I have chosen everything except a finger Ramp...
In all my years of playing I have never used one or even had the opportunity to try one out....I understand the physics behind it as it allows your right hand to stay above string and not dig in too much...but was there another reason you guys bought/installed one on your bass?....Also, my thoughts are that while its in the shop ...might as well get George to make one so it matches the top...

What are some of your ideas regarding Finger Ramps?

For those of you with AC's, I have a question about the piezos. Does the piezo system go through the onboard pre-amp? Or is the pre dedicated only to the mag pickup?

Remember, there are two kinds of AC6s. The AC6 classic doesn't use George's preamp -- at least when you get it with piezo only like I have. At any rate, with my AC6 Classic, the piezo runs through a preamp with a knob for cutting and boosting lows, and a cut/boost control for highs.

The the AC6 Signature, the mags and the piezo share the preamp -- which is low, mid and high boost only (no cut). There is a passive tone knob that cuts highs on mag and piezo pickups alike, which is good because the piezo can be harsh.

I seriously like ramps.

I didn't see the point in them either until I realized that when I was really playing something serious, I always played over one of the magnetic pickups.

So I ordered by BN6 with a ramp and wow -- I had to have them ever since.

My AC6 Classic can't have a ramp because of the chambers underneath. That's okay though because to get that upright sound, I play over the finger board anyway.

And I go back and forth on using the ebony ramp I had made for my AC6 Signature. I love that thing, but I prefer the look of the bass without it -- and I think it might liven the bass up to not use it, although I've made some changes to the strings and how I play it so I should experiment with the ramp again.

But you have the concept right; the ramp keeps you from going too low on the strings which allows you to play not just more quickly, but more evenly.

BTW, when I play with 2 or 3 finger right hand technique, I don't care as much.

When I play with thumb and 3 fingers though, then a ramp is super nice.

I know some guys, like Hadrien Feraud can play that technique without the ramp, but I can only do it if I hold very still or am sitting down. Since I can't seem to stand still when I play though, I like ramps.

Thanks Tom!!! Another question for you. Have you played your BN6LE in passive mode and then get a loud pop when switching to active? I've been playing a lot in passive lately, and if I leave the bass in passive for awhile, when I switch to active, the pop is loud enough to clip my amp. Just wondering if this is supposed to happen or if there may be something wrong with a connection in my bass!!
