My VF5 came today. I haven't gotten a chance to play it much, but it sounds GREAT so far. I'll post pics and some more thoughts later

Yee haw! I've been anxious to read your impressions.

Different topic: the UPS guy stopped by something yesterday (early Christmas gifts we ordered), and saw the cast on my hand. "You can't play bass with that on your hand!" he said with a smile.

You know you've been ordering too many basses lately when the UPS guy knows you play bass.

Bottom 3 knobs are EQ: bass, mid, treble.
Top 3 are Vol/Vol/Tone,
The tone knob is a push/pull EQ bypass

What do the controls do?
If your bass has three controls, they are: volume for the neck pickup, volume for the bridge pickup, and passive tone control.
On the Alain Caron bass, you must pull up on the bridge pickup volume control to turn the piezo pickup on.
If your bass has six controls, the knobs closest to the strings are: volume for the neck pickup, volume for the bridge pickup, and passive tone control.
The three knobs further away from the strings are our active 3-band eq circuit. They are: bass boost, mid boost, and treble boost.
Pull up on the passive tone control to disable the active eq and the active circuit will be completely bypassed. Pull up on the bridge pickup volume control to engage a coil tap for both pickups, offering a louder and fuller tone, but which will sacrifice noise canceling.

Sure thing.

The bottom row of knobs are boost controls for the preamp, and the top row are volume / volume tone.

More specifically, for the BN series of basses:

1 - Passive tone control / Pull up active passive switch (engaged the preamp)

2 - Volume control for bridge pickup / Pull up for noise cancelling

3 - Volume control for neck pickup

4 - Treble boost

5 - Mid boost

6 - Bass boost

On the VF series basses, they don't have a pull up switch for noise canceling, they are the "vintage" series so they don't get it.

On the AC series, knob #3 is pull up noise canceling, knob #2 pulled up turns on the piezo pickups, and knob #1 turns on and off the preamp.

Yes, I believe it was late 2004 when pulling up the 2nd knob was switched. Before, knob down meant the bass was in hum bucking (stacked coil) mode and you pulled it up for the more aggressive, single-coil tone, but now knob down is single coil.

I have to keep all that straight, because I have a 2004 BN5 and a 2006 BN6 that are opposites in the knob switch thingy.

BTW, I guess I took so long to compose my answer that by the time I submitted my reply, the question had already been answered. Twice!

First impression is that this bass sounds SWEET! Every note is very musical and defined. Its exactly what I was looking for. I'll get to play it at practice tomorrow and that will tell me more. I also may be doing some recording on saturday, so this baby is gunna get worked in quick!

My first impression when I played my alder and rosewood VF5, and this is something you could relate to, p0k, is, "Wow. I don't think I need my Pedulla Rapture anymore."

My Rapture's a great bass, very VERY fast neck, great look, very light, but I've always wished I'd have bought a 5 string.

My VF5 likewise has a very fast neck, a wonderful and very flexible tone, a 5th string, the preamp I've come to really depend on, and I think it even has a body style similar to my Rapture.
