Club Fbass (Part 4)

Narud came in with a bad attitude and when Tom7 gave him a number (welcoming him)
he crapped on that too by saying that he's being playing Fbasses for so long and he's just
now getting a number. All that he's done so far is complained about his bass, negate
everything Tom7 says, and talk about how DKB and the Alain Caron model's tone sucks.
That's lame. I can't stand Warwick basses but you don't see me in their thread
staring trouble with them. Some people just need to get a life and grow up.

im really liking this bass so far. i just dont believe in leaving things the way a builder had them set up wise just because. i know what i need better than anyone else does.
I wish I had your confidence in setting up basses to my taste. I really do.

I've been pretty remote all my life and would LOVE to get a DVD or some real training I could trust on this.

Of course, I could do some experimenting too, I have done some, but overall I definitely not as confident at you at this.

you have a 60's style vf though right? i set my pickup heights differently on my 62 than my 78.
Yep. And the fact that the alder/rw aggression is different than your ash/maple is surely playing a role there.

the fender really can get that same nasty sound with higher action. the boutique stuff for whatever reason doesnt.
That's true, you did say that.

Because it's not innovation if you're creating something you like less than the thing you already have.

Also, Hadrien hasn't blown anything- he's at the tippy top echelon of bassists right now. There's probably a long list of talented luthiers out there who would be willing to build a bass or even a signature line on his ideas/specs at the drop of a hat. If he decides to go with a different builder/product than Fbass, then he hasn't lost out on anything.
Good point, Bryan... diminishment certainly isn't innovation though, so if he liked it less, it wouldn't qualify as innovation for him.

Your other point is a good one too. This is Hadrien here... there's no reason he won't be able to do a signature bass with someone else.

In fact, I've often wanted to see that... say a mid-tier bass somewhere, then a top tier bass configured differently elsewhere, then a fretless bass somewhere else....

Problem is, and I have NO personal knowledge of this mind you, companies seem to want exclusivity.

Then again, Victor Wooten's fretless bass isn't a Fodera, is it?

Then again again, it's not like we can buy a signature Wooten fretless either, so maybe exclusivity IS the order of the day.

While I do sometimes gush over gear, I also always set my own stuff up... especially when new, and for the same exact reason, so +1 on that.

seriously man...we're talking about basses here. thats it. ive told george i didnt think some of the vf's did it. after getting this one and tweaking with it, im here saying it can do what it was intended to do. doesnt sound like a slam to me.

i make a living playing and teaching music. i buy gear for a specific purpose. i cant afford to buy one of everything. the vf5 is doing something pretty unique and i dont think the clips ive heard so far have been that flattering.

as to tom, i just thought the post of "why would hadrien go with an overseas smith instead of an f bass" pretty funny. he obviously doesnt see the appeal of those specs, i dont see the appeal of caron's specs. thats it.

I'm very surprised to read that you feel George sends out his basses poorly set up.
Holy cow! I definitely didn't get that from his post! We're just talking personal preference vs factory standard. No big deal. Do you not adjust your seats in a new car? There's a reason that stuff is adjustable. :)

im talking about the sunburst ash maple bass that donovan had that he was selling used. it originally came from the bass exchange in sherman oaks.

if you like your stuff the way it is cool. im not telling anyone they have to like what i like. but, as someone who has looked for a 5 that sounds like a legit 78 jazz with some marcus tone, the stock setup hasnt done it. no where did i say poorly set up. i will say that the 70's vf's werent set up in a way to demonstrate what they can do.

i dont gush over gear either. no one liked it in the coppolo thread when i said that i went in there with my rig, played everything he had and thought my fenders sounded better. that was my truth though. and to a perspective buyer, i think it does a disservice to only see the glowing gushing reviews that talkbass has to offer. i almost bought one off of the nothing but positive reviews sight unseen and if i would have i would have been disappointed.
Ah, my sunburst is alder and rosewood.

I hear you about the gushing, but given that all this is so SUBJECTIVE, and a matter of opinion, I think many if not most of us stay kind of quiet when we encounter someone gushing about a bass that didn't quite do it for us... that way we don't rain on the parades of those who are digging them, you know?
