By the way...Funny discussion. I was considering getting a VF5, and still may, but after hearing Joe's clips I'll definitely not be getting an ash/maple one. Those clips sound very little like a 70's jazz to me. It's not a bad tone but it's missing the "earthy" sort of tone the best jazz basses I've played/heard have. It's great to finally hear one of these played by someone that can play, though. The youtube video's of this bass for the most part are painful. That one guy who plays the Jaco tune is pretty good but I'd rather just hear him play without the backing track so I can really hear the bass.
I REALLY enjoy the Fbass clips on youtube made by common players. I think they help me evaluate the BASS, without the danger of being swept up by the "halo effect," you know?
I mean, it is really easy for me to listen to Alain Caron or Dave Hughes and think, "Wow, I gotta get me a bass like that!"
The thing is, a guy like Alain Caron could probably pick up a Louisville Slugger, nail 6 bungee cords to it, and still impress the #$%^ out of me, you know?
So to evaluate a bass, for me it's helpful to have clips of it being played by a great player so I know it's potential, and clips of it being played by mere mortals as well so I know what it will sound like in MY hands!
