I have to disagree with that! This past week I decided to try some DR Hi Beams on my '62 and it totally changed the character of my bass. Went back to my D'addario XL170's today and immediately went back to the cool vintage vibe I was used to. I've also tried the F Bass strings on my '62 and they were ok, but I didn't leave them on long.

I would suggest you try the strings that George recommends. You may be surprised.

im not saying the tone doesnt change, but the thickness or thinness of the g strings hasnt changed with different brands of strings. the tone of course would go from bright to round or whatever.

Was that green Studio 5 for sale at Cosmo Music earlier this summer? If so, I had my eye on it and then poof, it vanished.

I called George to discuss another matter, and during that conversation, mentioned losing the chance at a Studio. Coincidently, he was holding that exact Studio in his hands when I called, setting it up for the new owner.

As Maxwell Smart would say: "Missed by that much".

No, I'm the original & only owner of this particular Studio which is really an aqua blue colour, with hints of red coming out in a certain light - the "family" photo isn't that great. Maybe this pic shows it a little better.

I too am surprised by the difference strings can make -- including adding mids.

Joe, if your VF5 had Fbass strings and the other did not, what would be the harm of trying a different set of strings on the F to see if it nudges it closer to the 78?

It's not like it needs a total change of character; a nudge is all it may need.

Donovan, just wondering, if Tom decides against the fretted AC6, would it be for sale? Also, do you take Minivans for trade it? (Just kidding) That is one of the most beautiful basses I have ever seen.

the 78 had some generic house brand nickels on it. not the best string in the world. it didnt change the thickness of the high strings. trust me.....i plan on putting some low riders on this bass asap, but im not expecting them to cure anything. i expect the voice of the instrument to change slightly, but the acoustic character of it wont change.

I found strings make a world of difference and you can get as picky as switching individual string gauges to suit the instruments response.
There is a "sweet spot" for each individual instrument:
String material (nickel, stainless)
String gauge
String height
Pickup height
String height
The material the bridge is made of

I know it's getting picky, but it's worth squeezing the best out of your instrument.

The F Bass strings have a slight mid scoop. The DR Marcus Miller (not the standard DR stainless) have a much more filled in mids and punch.

The body shape is actually slightly different, the heel is not only rounded but more symmetrical than the BN5, and it has 20 frets instead of 22. I find it has a deeper bottom than my BN5, even with the same tone and boost settings.

George can probably add to this explanation, and confirm that the reason he dropped the Studio model was that it wasn't enough different from the BN5 to justify.

Why did I buy it? It was in stock when I visited the shop one day, and I fell in love with the sound (and, to be honest, the colour! :D)
