I really like the F preamp and I would like to upgrade one of my other basses with this particular preamp.
However, my understanding is that it is not possible to order an F Bass preamp.
Is there an aftermarket preamp (with passive tone control) that comes close to the F preamp ? If the bass / mid / treble controls are boost and cut, this is no big deal.

If memory serves, and I could definitely be wrong about this, FBass made an outboard preamp for a short time. I'm not sure if they sold out and didn't make another batch, but contacting Marcel would be the right next step.Unfortunately I believe not. You can certainly ask Marcel if he is willing to sell you one.
I do want to make the comment that the F bass preamp is really amazing, and I believe works best with an actual Fbass rather than other basses. Alot of time and energy went into the design and specs of the preamp to be voiced to suit Fbasses. I think you will get the best result by getting an Fbass with their proprietary preamp.

Definitely! Pairing Spinal Tap with FBass would bring them to the next level, as long as he’s not planning free form jazz explorations in front of a rock n roll crowd. Are you saying that this bass was originally supposed to go to Derek Smalls?

That's a good one! Tell you what, if you build me a wall of Fame like have have your beauties hanging on, I'll think about it.Yes, you do still have my VF5, but the links are fine on mine except I got an extra. I think this means you should send it to me.
I can relate,I bought my BN5 18 years ago and have adjusted the neck exactly once since then.I adjusted the action just once also to see if it could go lower without any fret buzz, it didHi Guys... I don’t go on here much anymore but wanted to share this one, which I also emailed to George and Marcel.
My band is recording an EP, I went to the engineer’s place to track bass and he showed me this! It’s a 1990 that he’s had since 1993. It played amazingly well, clean and clear up and down the neck; AND he said he hasn’t adjusted the truss rod or even done a setup in 20+ years!
