Club Fbass (thread 13)

@Fred312b Lookin' good! Love the color of your BN5!
Thanks! They do the best translucent blue, imho

I really should’ve jumped on the charcoal black burst that was in stock a while back at Bass San Diego. The prices have certainly climbed up over the last couple of years and they would’ve been a great deal in hindsight. I just couldn’t decide on matte vs gloss and I was hesitating on a big ticket purchase.

I hear ya'- I went a little overboard with ordering basses at the end of last year (2, an MTD USA 535 and a Sadowsky NYC 5er- YOLO!), my BN5 was a bargain compared to those prices...

I bet. The F Bass price is near the top of my comfort zone. I can afford one without selling an organ, but for my level of hobby playing at my skill level, they are right at my personal intersection of luxury and shame :)

I'm currently on a J bass hunt too. I'm debating if I want a BN5 or if a VF5 would make sense. There's the used brown fade VF5 up for sale now, which looks lovely, but isn't quite the color I'd go with. I feel like for that price, I should pay the extra (or wait) for the color I want. I also haven't seen a VF that I love yet. That said, this is pretty good.

Not sure if this is any help, but I owned a VF4 for a while - 2 Aguilar jazz pickups. And I currently have a BN5.

In my personal experience, the VF had an amazing 70s jazz bass sound, but the BN5 tone is more of a traditional 60s type sound with lots of warmth and punch - and the flexibility of the active preamp.

I really love them both and don’t think you can go wrong with either one.

But I also have a VF 5 with an MM style humbucker in the bridge and an Aguilar J pup on the neck, and ultimately that is my favorite FBass.

The good news is that, IMO, the standard ash/maple, nothing fancy BN5 is as good as an Fbass gets. Skip the VF.
A BN5 is the ultimate 5-string jazz bass.
