The BNF5 I have is pretty sweet. I could see the BN5 being fantastic as well. I did hear a demo on YT comparing the VF to the BN and there were some VF sounds I liked a bit more. However, the differences weren’t night and day. They could probably be adjusted with EQ to get close enough for my needs. The differences likely only stand out when comparing/contrasting directly. I’d probably never notice them if there wasn’t another example to provide contrast.

I'm currently on a J bass hunt too. I'm debating if I want a BN5 or if a VF5 would make sense. There's the used brown fade VF5 up for sale now, which looks lovely, but isn't quite the color I'd go with. I feel like for that price, I should pay the extra (or wait) for the color I want. I also haven't seen a VF that I love yet. That said, this is pretty good.

That really is a stunning bass, and currently my favorite FBass. You can't go wrong though, whichever flavor of FBass tickles your fancy.

So I've had several FBasses and have most recently been playing my blue MM-J configuration VF5. It's a wonderful bass and I've also been rotating it with a killer Sadowsky 5, a Roscoe 5, and an MTD 5.

All of them are amazing instruments and I'm thankful to have them.

However, I've also got a BN5 that I had listed for sale here a while back - but I changed my mind and decided to keep it.

Yesterday, before band rehearsal, I realized that I had never actually played the BN5 with my band.

So I loaded it up and took it to rehearsal.

Let me tell you... this beast absolutely slayed. Playing through an Aguilar head and a Barefaced Super Twin cab, this bass was an absolute tone monster. It's really making me reconsider having the other basses, because there's nothing it can't do. Perfect warmth, punch, definition, low B like nothing I've ever heard before.

I was an idiot for ever putting this bass up for sale.

It is a great looking bass. Seems like the Brown Burst color is a common production model. If I was a "brown bass" guy I'd probably have caved and grabbed one by now. The black and red finishes are more my thing, though I've been pretty tempted by some of the blue and blue fades.

I also own a VFPJ (60s position), a VFJJ (70s position) and a BN5. Right now the JJ is getting the most love, but they all rotate to being my favorite at one time or another depending on my mood. Everyone will have their personal preference, I absolutely love them all. You can't lose when you choose FBASS.

On that note - would anyone know of any comparison between proprietary pickups and aguilar HC Js in VFs? Also, why did F Bass drop those off? Especially that they are still doing in house pickups like BN singles and dual coils for Deluxes.

I’m with the rest on the Aguilar pickups. My VF had them and while it was a wonderfully crafted instrument, the tone was meh. I tried the same raised pole pieces in a Fender elite J and meh. I tried one of their P’s also meh. I do have one bass where the Aguilar pickups sound good and in this case it is the J/MM set installed by Mayones. I picked up the bass and instantly fell in love. Only downside is it’s a 4 and I’m primarily playing music where a 5 is highly required. So, I bought a BN5 and it is wonderful! But… I knew it would be.

I wish I liked the Aguilar pickups (and preamps) more than I do. Occasionally I hear the DCB's in a context that seems to sound good, but I just cant seem to get behind any of their P or J pups, so far, in basses I've played. And bless their hearts, the OBP3 thing has eluded me for years.

I really liked the early VF's with the 'in house' singles.
