Club Fbass (thread 13)

The shift of the bass on the strap is good for shoulder fatigue, but for me it is also great for my hands and great when I'm playing my unlined fretless basses because it helps me place my hands better with the marking dots on top.

Speaking of bass weight, check out the difference in weight between my BN6, and my BN6 Limited Edition Replica

I have to agree about the first position being a bit closer than normal now that I look at the bass. That is definately why the 34.5" of the FBass is workable for me then.:) I have small hands and play one finger per fret, so anything longer than 34" usually kills my fingers.

Also, my bass is well over 10lbs but a trip to Hamilton to buy one of the padded FBass straps helped a lot with the weight. Well worth the $$$ IMO. Amazing high quality straps.
You probably remember Kjung who used to post here a lot. He owned pretty much every high end bass out there and is one of the most articulate describers of the nuances of basses that I've ever seen on TB. But I remember him saying that was the one thing he couldn't get use to with his BN and made me aware of it, but that's one of the things I like about it!! I guess that's why they make both chocolate and vanilla:hyper: Are all of Georges' straps 3"? 2.5 " is my sweet spot.

Wow, big difference. Different woods?

Not sure if they have different strap widths, but I doubt it. Mine is 3"+. More like 3.25-3.5". When I was at the shop, all straps were the same but in multiple colours.

BTW, I do tap, but not that often, and NOTHING like what Trey Gunn is doing.

Your proposal is intriguing though: perhaps with some lighter strings I can look at doing more of it and doing it better.

If tapping would inspire you, all good; on the other hand (literally) I was thinking of using your fretting hand above the bass (from the top) and your plucking hand similarly as you do today, so you'd generate a similar sound, like playing a "lap bass"/piano. Just a thought, all the best.

Hi Tom7,

Do you have any AC classic Video to share other than the official video from fbass played by Alain Caron or from the NAMM shows?

I really want to listen more to this bass? Could you play something?

Thanks!!

I don't have a video, but I do have an mp3, if you want to check that out.

I recorded this clip with black nylon coated strings, then I was going to change to Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats and record it again so I could hear the difference, but I never got around to doing the second recording.

Tom7, you are the man!
This is really good enough, I could hear the acoustic upright bass character and string noise of the bass, although I would like to see your bass face as well!! :-)

Happy Easter!

The world is better off without my bass face I'm afraid. :-)

The looks in this case are definitely with the bass, not me.

Hey guys, there have been a few questions regarding instrument weight and Aguilar pickups in our VFs...

Weight:
With most BN5s and VF5s we typically aim for 9.75 lbs. We feel it's the ideal weight for comfort while still retaining that big punchy tone with long even sustain and midrange cut...characteristics which diminish with a lighter weight. That being said, we're all built differently so we can fluctuate +/- ~1 lb through wood and hardware selection. Just have to specify when ordering.

Aguilar Pups:
In Jan 2014 we officially began using Aguilar's J-HC (and P-60) in our VF series. The Aggies produce an overall cleaner tone with the mids and highs placed just a hair better than the old F Bass single-coils. The old singles' mids were a little low while the highs produced a faint sizzle/graininess. So overall the Aggies are more mid focused, clear, sit better in a mix, and produce just the right amount of grind when you dig in. This is all to very small degree of course but when AB'd side by side the difference is present.

Hope this helps!

It is so interesting to hear your opinions on this because I preferred the Fbass pickups too. I thought I was missing something though -- I have partial hearing loss in upper frequencies so I don't always completely trust my own ears. Anyway, I thought I was supposed to prefer the Aguilars, but I didn't. That said, I do think the Aguilars still sound good -- I just like the Fbass pickups more.

Hahaha! I just realized that his F Bass pickups have exposed magnets....I had them mixed up. I definitely prefer the F Bass pickups, by a large margin. The Aguilars don't have any life to them...no character. I'd still love to hear an F Bass with dual coils (side by side).
BTW, I am enjoying your soundcloud channel. Man I love the Internet.

Thanks, Tom! I really appreciate it.....yeah, the interweb's pretty cool, right? Remember before the internet when we had to work really hard to find out what was going on in the world music wise? We're pretty lucky these days how easy it is to hear so much great music from so many people.
