Club Fbass (thread 13)

I have a couple of updates for y'all. First up, I recently picked up Mitch's Studio 5, and I am happy as heck! I have long been intrigued by the Studio 5, but there aren't a lot of them out there. This past summer, I had a chance to play one up at the F Bass shop, and I was hooked! So, when Mitch's came up for sale, I felt compelled to jump on it, and I'm glad that I did.

While I am not ready to share any final or complete thoughts on the tone (I will play it at band practice for the first time tonight), my initial thoughts are that the Studio 5 lays somewhere between the smoothness of BN series and the growl of the VF basses. In fact, it's rather chameleon-like, in that it feels very smooth with a lighter touch, but has a great, vintage J-bass kind of growl when you dig in. It can even get rather P-bass-like with the neck pickup solo'd. It does have a bit more low to low-mid presence, as well.

I know that it doesn't exist without the pics, so here you go!

Very cool, Tom. It is too hard to do a roster update from an iPad, so I'll update the club roster when I get to a laptop.

My favorite F that I've personally played, and I haven't played a whole lot of them, was a Studio 5 back in 2000. it came into the store about 3 months after I bought my BN5 there. If it had been there at the same time there is a good chance that I would have walked out with it, and that says a lot because I totally love my BN. I wonder if the slightly extra girth of the Studio was what inspired Mitch to do the same with the standard VF body. Enjoy it, they are extremely nice basses. Jim

I just got back from band practice, and the Studio 5 killed! Both the guitar player and drummer commented on the looks right away (and they see a lot of different basses and normally don't say much). At the end of practice, my drummer pointed at the Studio 5 and said "top 5, all time." Considering that I've played with this drummer for about 15 years (in this current band - we actually played in our first band together back in middle school), that means something!

Of course, I was pleased as punch, as well. It definitely has more clarity than either my BN5 or my VF5, but it's also very full sounding. It's a keeper, for sure!

I just saw some bad news in facebook, Allan Lemieux (i believe he's member bassman10) passed away. While I never had the chance to meet the guy we exchanged a few lines, as he owns the bass that made me fell in love with fBass, an amazing BNF6 I tried in Hamilton a few weeks after he got it (I ordered mine a few weeks later). Great guy.

While impersonal to do this through this channel, I thought about letting you know about this fellow fbass player.

I was wondering if anyone can tell the difference in tone of a 21 fret vs 24 fret Fbass BN. The pickup placement is a little different.

I am under the impression that the 24 fret version has a rear pickup closer to the bridge. Is this what they call the 70's position?

Thanks for all information in advance.

Hi, friends. I recorded this piece for a bass contest. Hope You'll like it :)

Definitely liked it, especially the change at 1:14.

I was surprised by the slap tone of of the BN6; my BN6 with an ebony board has a slightly darker slap tone.

Also, on the AC6, I noticed you tended to play up and down the neck rather than across the strings. Was there a reason for that? Or is that just how you decided to do it, no reason in particular?

Best wishes on the contest.

Wow That was a great listen Delacius! Ok so this is my first F bass VF5. I wanted an alder / rosewood back in my stable and I picked it up in trade. build date 07/08 what a wonderful Jazz inspired bass got to play it on several songs last night. I am so excited about this bass I just had to say!

Happy New Year!!!
