Club Fbass (thread 13)

I don't know how many times I've watched those videos, but they are both good.

For single note lines I preferred the Fbass pickups but only slightly... Really could go either way.

For chords I felt the Fbass pickups shined.

For slap, I felt the Aguilar shined.

Based on the videos and my ears and whatever other disclaimers... I've never played a VF but I love my BN.

My new BN5 arrived :)

Charcoal Burst - BN5 w/ round wounds (F bass Exposed Core)
Red Burst - BN5 w/ flat wounds (LaBella 760FL-B)

The Red bass was purchased in 2014, the Charcoal just arrived.

Wow! Those are two smokin' BN5s? It looks like both have ash bodies and ebony finger boards... are there any differences other than the finishes and the strings?

They are both great looking; welcome to the club.

Thanks!

You are correct, ash bodies, maple necks, macassar ebony finger boards. The differences are small, the red one has recessed strap locks, a MOP "maple leaf" serial number inlay, and an oil finish on the neck (not 100% sure, but its thin and is now glossy from play); while the charcoal one has a "vintage tint" applied to the neck, so it looks brownish, and also has the satin finish running along the neck. so it feels wonderful and smooth in hand.

If I ever get another BN5 it's going to be the red burst, love that color.

The old VFs had single coils made by Fbass and they were phenomenal at getting the '60s J tone, but not so good in the '70s J spacing, for some reason. I'm not sure why.

I haven't had a chance to play any recent VFs to compare the Aggies.

I think it might got to do with the weight of the ash body. I had 1 before that was over 10lbs. Dead heavy but had a great low end punch.

I'm excited to read what you guys are saying about the weight of 70s configured basses, because that's my experience as well.

BN5s have their pickups in the 60s positions -- which probably isn't perfectly exact to say because 60s basses were 34 inch scale length and a BN5 is 34.5. At any rate, that combination of pickup placement, scale length, woods and neck profile combine for a fantastic tone, and fantastically versatile tone -- not to mention great balance and playability.

However, when it comes to 70s configured basses, my experience is that a HEAVY ash bass with single coils in the 70s positions has a thick and tummy rumbling fundamental, and is more satisfying sonically than lighter basses of the same woods and configuration.

I absolutely agree. I have a old Zon with a solid swamp ash body that has really nice low end fundamentals. But my VF5 is twice as thick - which adds this clarity to that incredible low end which is truly unique.

Do you know the actual weight of your VF, is it closing in on 11 lbs.? I can handle up to that weight, had a SR5 alder that was over 12 lbs, was always fatiguing to play after a couple of sets.
