Club Fbass (thread 13)

Question for the experts: I am owner of a new-to-me BN5 made in 2005. as compared to my other active basis, the output volume is significantly less. yes, I've change the battery in the preamp :). Is the output volume adjustable via a trim pot in the control cavity somewhere? I can't find a way to adjust it. Thanks!
Just a random thought. Maybe you have pulled up the knob for the passive setting?

The pups in 2005 were the older custom Seymour Duncans. I remember they had lower volume output compared to the next generation FBass pups. There is no trim control and changing the battery will not do anything. However, The controls are boost only and I've found if you use them towards max you get a real significant boost in overall volume.

So my 2001 BN5 has SD pickups? I never knew this

Both generation pups have their thing....we liked the old SD's tone a lot too and those were the ones re created for the limited run of the Studio model a few years back. I dont remember exactly when the change was made.

Yes sir Tom!

This bass lives only a few miles from the F-Bass Factory. It's killer. The neck was definitely built by George F himself, it's super fast. There's not serial number on that bass either. The body shape is more Fender-like......no little BN dimple at the bottom. It has true F-Bass single coils only, no hum cancelling. 70's pick-ups position! Love the Nitro finish too! 34" scale instead of 34.5". And a very cool biohazard symbol at the 12th fret.

Take a closer look at the Natural BN5......notice anything? That bass is a precursor to the VF series. It's still 34.5" scale and also nitro. It reminds me of a late 50's Fender tonally. It's a really fun bass.

The VF5 is really special too. That bad boy has Alleva Coppolo JB-5 single coil pick-ups in it!!! Body is Ash and pairs well with the Indian Rosewood Fretboard that George has recently been getting. 18mm string spacing and the neck has been trimmed down. The pick-guard has a custom shape to it as well if you take a closer look. This bass was built for a very very good friend of F-Bass.....and a good friend of mine too. Thanks Mitch!
Wow! You really have some great pieces in your collection! Very cool.

To elaborate on TolerancEJ's post:

Somewhere around 2004, the bridge vol pot "down" (or in the normal position) was hum cancelling mode, which is noticeably more quiet. It's since been reversed, so that "down" is "single coil" mode.

I'm not sure which side of the change your bass is on, but it might be worth trying both switch positions to be sure.

Here we go my friends!! Meet this guy next week in NY, so excited!!!

There have been small changes (specifically with the neck pocket design of the VF series), but after reading each of the tens of thousands of posts from all the previous club threads, I don't recall coming across anything so significant that it should affect purchasing decisions beyond the typical "what sounds best to you" with wood choice etc.

In addition, the stainless frets of these things means they last for years and years.
