Club Fbass (thread 13)

Received this well worn BN5 yesterday and gave it a good setup and straight to a gig.....sounds and feels great! No I am just really looking for a used AC5!

Question: what are the pickups in this older BN5? There is not a coil tap option, just a preamp bypass. But there i snot hum when you solo a pickup so they can't be single coils right? Must be dual coils?

I am not sure about the older BN's but I thought most iterations had a push/pull on the bridge pickup volume for Single/Hum-canceling and depending on the year the options changed wireing from down = hum-cancel to down = single coil.

Maybe shooting George an e-mail can shed some light. Fbass has always been responsive and helpful when I have had questions.

Great looking BN you have there! It looks like it has a story to tell.

View attachment 1107319 Your bass looks like a twin to my '99 BN5, same color etc. Mine has split P type pups under the humbucker shells, no coil split switch just a pre-amp bypass. Jim

Awesome! I have considering asking about a small clear pickguard like what is in the Alain Caron basses.... did yours come with that clear guard or did you have it made?

I had George make it shortly after I bought it. I had been playing a Ernie Ball SR5 for 5 years before so the pick guard was a sort of a combination Music Man and Fender design. The bass has the very soft nitro finish that he was using back then and it started to wear away after one week of playing behind the front pup where I anchor my thumb when plucking. George and Marcel will make anything you want. I also installed a second strap pin that was more centered at the end of the body so the strap would have a sharper angle, feel, on my back when playing. I remember George telling me he encourages his customers to do whatever they need to do to make the bass feel like it's 'theirs'. I've had it for 17 years this month :)

Finally bit the bullet, my first f bass is on the way. I snagged a BN5 in a lovely brown burst fade with maple neck from Donovan at fretspot. Now I just have to wait about two weeks for it to turn up in my little country. I'll post some eye candy when she arrives! :hyper:

edit: Here's a vid of the bass in question, Donovan sure does know how to pick em

Ok, so now I've got that BN5 coming, figured I'd ask a couple of q's in terms of what you can coax out of them. I've had a go in-store on a BN5 and loved it in terms of it's playability, balance, ergonomics, scale and general tone. But have any of you guys had much experience when it comes to getting an aggressive rock tone out of them? I know the pup's are a lot more mellow than some (they are def not emg's.. which is fine, I don't need to bark 24/7 thanks) and are pretty much built to temper harsh treble tones.. which is fine cause I wanted this as an all round swiss army knife bass anyway. If they can't get a solid heavy rock tone off the bat, or metal (and I'm talking sabbath, maiden, priest, metallica.. hardly death metal) I'm thinking if I pair it with my darkglass microtubes b3k, it should get a bit of agro boost if I need to play something heavy anyway, but just figured I'd ask all the same.

Oh yeah and slightly off topic from that, in saying I've played it in store, I haven't played one standing up. Is there a huge difference in how it sits on you? I know there's an issue with the longer horn pushing it further in to the body so that it's easier to reach first position etc.. but it is super noticeable? I'm sure I'll adjust anyway.. but it's always nice to get some opinions.

Lastly, anyone else got one of these new 'fade/gradient' finishes yet? what are your thoughts? I haven't seen one in person.. but I assume they are something pretty special.

Cheers.

You can get a really nice "brown" rock tone by dialing back the bridge pickup a little while in humbucking mode. An added bonus is that this setting will also give you a ferocious slap tone. :)

+1 to that suggestion. However, I will say that when I want a more aggressive, rock tone, I go for my VF5 over my BN5. My BN5 is super clear and one of the "smoothest" basses I own. It's very full, to boot. That being said, my BN4 is actually much more aggressive sounding than my BN5. I'd say my BN4 lies somewhere between the BN5 and VF5 in terms of "aggressive" vs "smooth," with a great mix of articulation and fullness. Now that I think about it, my Studio 5 also favors a middle ground between the BN5 and VF5. Sorry for the off-tangent bird walk...

Re: balance.... Fantastic IMO.

My VF5 is over 10lbs and I don't find it heavy at all on a 4hr gig. My other basses are a 7lb Valenti and an 8lb Fodera. They balance very well due to the long upper horn IME.

Sheldon had his stuff in Club Bass for a minute and it was a disaster, and George and Marcel from FBass will never deal with Club Bass, proximity or not. In fact, both brands are currently in Toronto Long and McQuade stores downtown Toronto ( FBass) and Markham( Dingwall, FBass). Doing well too:)
FBass will also carry stock in their showroom at the shop for anyone who didn't know.

The Fbass shop is THE BEST place to demo an Fbass. Not only do they have the best they offer for you to check out, they've got the best amps you could ask for to really hear how they sound. George Furlanetto will even lay down some chops right in front of you too. He likes to make sure all his basses are playing and sounding great.
