Club Fbass (thread 13)

I have a BN6 and I have struggled a little bit grasping the tone controls. Never had so many options on a bass. I feel like passive is too low of an output maybe so I use active but I seem to be missing my upper mods. My G and C string are not nearly as loud as my b and e string. I am continuously fiddling with the active eq to try to get an even response across strings but so far not much luck. If anybody has any insight/advice I would love to hear it! This is the best playing bass I have ever laid my hands on but I just need to master the controls.

The Fbass shop is THE BEST place to demo an Fbass. Not only do they have the best they offer for you to check out, they've got the best amps you could ask for to really hear how they sound. George Furlanetto will even lay down some chops right in front of you too. He likes to make sure all his basses are playing and sounding great.
+1

FBass is just up the street for you and only an hour and a bit for me, but a FBass visit is worth a long drive IMO. Great place to visit IMO and I am not a fan of Hamilton at all!

George and Marcel are great as are all of the staff. I definitely recommend asking for the full tour though.

Have you measured the distance from the bottom of the string to the top of the pickup? You may need to adjust the pickup/string height to even out what the pickup is sensing when plucked.

Also, if your bass has the single coil / hum-canceling switch (typically a push/pull on one of the volume knobs) check the tone and output difference between positions. For some reason on my BN5's the hum-canceling option is quieter and more muted then the single coil option. Also when the pre-amp tone controls are rolled off/flat there does not seem to be a volume or tonal difference between the active and passive circuits.

Oh, and my BN's pretty much live in single coil mode very clear and crisp to my ears.

Hope you can get things sorted out!

Hello,
A question for you guys : how do you set up your BNF in order to have a big "mwah" tone ? I don't speak only about the preamp settings but also about the neck relief and strings height.
I know that it depends on the player's style, but I guess there are some tips to go into the right direction.
So can you tell me if your neck is straight or have little/big relief ? What are your strings heights at the 12th fret ? And what about the pickups ?
Thanks !

Mwah has more to do with the plucking position. The further away from the bridge you play, the more mwah you get.

On any fretless bass, you will get more "Mwah" with a very straight neck, low string height, plucking with your right hand over the middle pickup or even close to the neck, depressing the strings fairly strongly with your left hand. Also increase mid frequencies with your EQ or preamp and favour the bridge pickup somewhat when blending the middle and bridge pickups.

Nope. Uh uh. No way. You are going to have to buy a sexier BN5. YEOWZA!

Crazy gig tonight at a bar that we haven't played before. Lots of dancers banging into me and a drunk fell into my amp and double gig bag with my Valenti 5er in it. No damage except my cord being pulled out of my Monique at literally the second I was to start the little bass part in All Right Now. I was back up and running the n a few seconds. Note to self: Bring the Squier as a backup at rowdier venues!

The VF5 sounded great as usual with my Monique/Minnie/Berg combo. No effects any more except for a Radial boost and a TC tuner. It just works for all types of music.

Crappy phone pic but I think this bass will be with me for a long time.....

If I ever got a VF5 it would be exactly like yours, I'm actually thinking about selling my '65 Jazz Bass to fund one!
I really like it. Perfect complement to my uber-modern Valenti. I can get a
Good 60's Jazz tone with the Alleva pickups as well.

It is over 10lbs, but the way a FBass balances, it doesn't feel any heavier than my 7lb Valenti.

My '72 Jazz hasn't seen the light of day since I picked up the VF5....
